eldritchhobbit: (Star Wars/Mock)

Right. So the cast of Star Wars VII has been announced. Beyond the welcome familiar faces are some interesting names. I wonder in particular what the presence of Andy Serkis suggests. After all, he's made himself synonymous with pioneering CGI-assisted performances.

We also know the following:
* Several names were conspicuously absent from the announced list.
* The Expanded Universe has been Jossed. (TBH, we've known that was coming for some time.) The existing (now non-canonical) EU stories will be labeled "Legends."
* More casting news is to come.

Your thoughts on the news?

To quote Wash from Serenity, "Do we care? Are we caring about that?"

Wow Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are all on board? Yay! Hope this does justice to the original vision of George Lucas.

Impressive, isn't it? I bet that took some doing. I was sorry not to see Billy Dee Williams on the list. I think he withdrew from "Dancing with the Stars" on account of health issues, so I'm not sure if that was a factor. I believe he's going to be making an appearance on NCIS later this season, though, so who knows.

At any rate, my fingers and toes are crossed in hopes that this turns out well.

I'm not the big SW fan I once was (thanks in part to the horrible prequel trilogy). One thing I'm hoping is that Luke, Leia, and Han will truly be the main stars and not their kids. For years I've railed against "reunion" movies that mainly seem to be about the kids of the original stars (usually said movies being backdoor pilots for possible new series). I care nothing for the kids or EU. It's the original stars I care about. That's why hearing the original script was tossed was good news for me.

Part of me is also wondering "Is JJ Abrams going to ruin another of my childhood memories like he did with Star Trek II?"

YES! This! I couldn't agree more. *nods emphatically*

I'm afraid I agree with Wash on this one.

LOL! It's remarkable how often I hear his voice (and those lines in particular) in my head.

When I saw Andy Serkis mentioned...

I have to agree with you. I think he's a marvelously talented actor, but let's face it, Lucas went CGI crazy in the most recent films (I miss my muppet Yoda!), and the last thing Star Wars needs is more of that.

If J.J. Abrams messes this up, I think he should forever be known as "Jar Jar Abrams."

I've read a lot of negative comments due to the lack of diversity. Considering the mess Abrams made of Star Trek, I'm not sure why anyone should be surprised. I'd hoped he'd do better with Star Wars, because I keep hearing that he's a fan. I guess only time will tell.

You'd think he would be more aware of such concerns after all the criticism he got for Trek, wouldn't you? And, as you say, he's supposed to have even more invested in this 'verse than in Trek, so that should be a factor, too. I'm biting my nails and anxious for more news.

My oft-repeated mantra of "at least he's not Lucas" can work only for so long. ;)

my thought is that the only reason this film is being made is greed.

I hope that's not true... but yeah, I worry.

From the io9 link: "It's as if 51 percent of the population cried out in pain, and was suddenly silenced."

I cackled at that. Also, my friend's brother said "Jar Jar Abrams," and I can't stop laughing.

I've been in complaining mode all week, so allow me to have a few passing thoughts...
1. To be honest, I'm not actually into Star Wars. I've tried, but for some reason I always forget what happens right after I finish watching any of them. (Plus it has become such a pop culture thing that I have to distance myself from it to keep my indie cred. Baha!)
2. Even still, I honor you and others who are legit fans from the original days and mourn with you.
3. And even though I barely care about this new film, that doesn't stop me from being outraged at the lack of females and diversity in general. My initial reaction was, "Wow. A bunch of men. Color me extremely bored." Not to mention what it says about our society in general.
4. I also mourn on behalf of the young girls (I know of a whole family of them) who are way into Star Wars.

Lack of representation sucks.

That is brilliant.

Also, my friend's brother said "Jar Jar Abrams," and I can't stop laughing.

Ha! Perfect. If he messes this up, I suspect he'll be called that for a very, very long time.

(Plus it has become such a pop culture thing that I have to distance myself from it to keep my indie cred. Baha!)

LOL! Fair enough.

2. Aw, thank you.

3. Yes! Michael Stackpole, who has written several professional SW novels, made a great blog post pointing out how diverse the old Republic was, and how it was the Empire that shut everyone down/out. The Rebellion was also a greatly diverse lot. So, if the post-Rebellion world doesn't look a) like the old Republic or b) like the Rebellion itself, it sort of undermines all that the heroes in SW stood for.

4. Augh. THIS! I'm always on the lookout for cute greeting cards to buy and save for my little niece (whose parents both love SW, so she'll be raised on it). Just this past weekend I saw the cutest Yoda card. I would have loved (and still would love) to get it in the mail myself. Then I realized it said "To A Boy..." on the inside. It was in the "Boy's Cards" section in the drugstore. There was no corresponding card for little girls. ??? It's bad enough that it was in the children's section, but why must little boys and little girls have distinct cards? I never played with baby dolls, but I played with SW action figures all day long, and that was over 35 years ago. Wow, we've come a long way... not. *sigh*

The Expanded Universe has been Jossed.

Well, crap. I was looking forward to that. Especially Tenel-Ka and her whole backstory. TODS read a bunch of the Young Jedi Adventures to Metherion, who then began reading the Rogue Squadron books when he was in middle school and kept going from there.
