eldritchhobbit: (Sherlock/NRK parody murder by death)

Good news! "Sherlock Returns for One-Off Special AND Series 4."

And here are a couple of other nifty things that may be of interest. (Thanks to Michael!)

- Living with Frankenstein, a web series: "Frankenstein’s Monster (aka Frank) is alive and living in Los Angeles with Mary Shelley, P.B. Shelley, and Lord Byron. In this dark comedy the Monster is not a fictional character. P.B. Shelley created Frank, and Mary Shelley wrote the novel Frankenstein to chronicle actual events." Check it out here and here.

- Finding Hogwarts: This is a documentary film about seven Harry Potter fans and their journey to find Hogwarts, as well as the stories and shared experiences they had as they followed Harry until the very end. More details are here.

Speaking of Frankenstein, the latest installment in the Monster Hunter International series (entitled Monster Hunter Nemesis) recently came out. In case you're not familiar with MHI, think of it as like Ghostbusters but with corporeal monsters and lots of dakka instead of spooks and unlicensed nuclear accelerators. You may hear comparisons to Men in Black and the X-Files, but these analogies are flawed. The resemblance to MIB is tenuous at best, while the X-Files comparison is so absurd that anyone who makes it should get a swift kick where it counts.

Anyway, Monster Hunter Nemesis focuses on Franks, a Monster Control Bureau agent who is actually the original Frankenstein's monster. Now I'm leery when a writer chooses to focus on an antagonistic character of the sort that fans love to hate. All too often, these sort of treatments wind up diminishing them. Fortunately, Franks does not suffer such an indignity.

Oh, this is great to hear! Thanks for telling me about Monster Hunter Nemesis. It's new to me, and it sounds terrific!

While the Monster Hunter International series is generally good, it doesn't really hit its stride until the third book Monster Hunter Alpha. It also has some Lovecraft influences. One of the more memorable bits from the second book Monster Hunter Vendetta is when the characters are going through a certain musty tome written in Arabic, and one of them is startled to find an illustration of her childhood imaginary friend Mr. Trash Bags. An older relative then breaks it to her that Mr. Trash Bags had not been an imaginary friend, but a very real shoggoth (and they never figured out why it hadn't just eaten her).

Another series from the same author is the Grimnoir Chronicles. The best way to describe it is if you took X-Men, sucked out all the whiny angst, and filled that massive void with dieselpunk and hardboiled noir attitude.

Thank you! I had a fabulous birthday and I'm looking forward to the coming year. Shall we have coffee between classes? (I'm planning to sign up for your class this fall).

I'm so glad to hear that you had a great birthday - and that you'll be in my class this fall (that's great news)! I'd love to do coffee with you soon. Right after this summer semester ends I'm off to Georgia and then to London, but when I'm back, let's get together. Definitely! (We need to talk Welcome to Night Vale, among other things! *g*)
