An eldritch day to you all!

Great post! I'm saving it for future reference.

I don't think I have ever read Lovecraft, except perhaps random stories in anthologies. What would be a good first experience? I'd probably lean more toward the Poe-like stories than fantasy.

YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY!

Also, whoa. Don't forget Alan Lee! His birthday is today, too.

What a great HPL birthday post! Thanks for all the very useful links -- I lost my collection in a hard drive crash this spring.

If you like audio fiction, you might try this out. I give a brief 15-minute introduction to Lovecraft, and then there's a dramatic reading of one of his best Poe-esque stories, "The Rats in the Walls."

I quite like "The Colour Out of Space" (which is either purely psychological or science fiction, depending on how you look at it) and The Shadow Over Innsmouth" (ditto - this may be my favorite HPL story, but I waver) as starting points. I hope this helps! :)

I'm not really an audio kind of person when it comes to fiction, but I'll bookmark your intro and if I like Lovecraft I will come back and listen to it. In the meantime, I'll hit up the library for your other recs. Thanks! (ETA - oops, just noticed you gave me LINKS. *headdesk* Thanks again.)

Speaking of audio, I got my CD of Leviathan 99 in the mail today. Whether I ever listen to it or whether it sits on the shelf as a mememto of that day remains to be seen. ;o)

p.s. Hope you are feeling a bit better than earlier this week!
