Yes, I remember that you had posted about this! (I was a Campfire Girl, too!) I can't begin to imagine how terrifying it must have been to be at camp quite literally *when* this happened; for that matter, I can't imagine what all of your parents and family went through until you were back safe at home. My heart goes out to all of you! Texas always felt like "next door" to us, so I can understand why this felt very close to you geographically as well as in spirit.
Things were a lot more sheltered back then, so this crime really hit hard.
You're so right about this! If you look at Camp Scott's security... well, it was non-existent at the time. Just a handful of years later, when I went to Campfire camp in Oklahoma -- a lot of mothers decided to go with us, including my own, and other girls didn't go at all -- there was a full fence around the place with a gate and a 24/7 guard. It's like Camp Scott was the "before" photo and my Campfire camp was the "after" photo. Things never went back to the way they were.
