Winter!

Winter is my favorite season, second only to autumn. And at last, it feels as if we're finally experiencing winter.

I have pictures from our home to illustrate...

And here is Virginia's enthusiastic response to the snow.

I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape - the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn't show.

lol And not two moments before I clicked on my flist I had been thinking about how much I disliked winter and how anxious I was for summer! Then again, winter begins in October and ends in April here.

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! We really need to switch places then, because I really detest summer, and it seems to stretch from May to September here. My comfort zone is about 40-50 degrees Farenheit, but I'd rather it be colder than that instead of warmer.

[identity profile] groovekittie.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You should come to norther Saskatchewan then. :) I like our summers. Dry and the hottest it gets is 36C (96.8F) during heat waves, but the normal temp is about 24C (75.2F).

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, that does sound lovely!!!

[identity profile] groovekittie.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Now, I know you say you like colder temps, but you should also know that it can get down to -60C (-76F) with the windchill. The lowest I've seen the temperature drop on our thermometer outside was -42C (-43.6F). That was when the windchill was at -60C.

Ooo... Pretty! I *love* your icon! It just started snowing here (for the first time in weeks.) It would be nice to have one more proper winter experience here before it's all over... Because soon it will be Spring. Ugh. The only season I really hate.

Schmoopy taking a winter nap! Clever schmoopy!

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :) The icon is by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] euclase. It seemed very appropriate. I love yours. Piglet rules!

I don't like Spring, either. Or Summer. :)

I think Virginia has the right idea with the nap plan!

[identity profile] randomalia.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You have such a gorgeous home! And how amazing to have woods like that. Virginia looks like she has the right idea - stay inside and doze. :)

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much for your kind words! My husband designed our house, so we really enjoy it, and most of our 11 acres are woods, which I really enjoy. Virginia, as you can tell, is not much the explorer, however. :)

[identity profile] aelfgifu.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
squeeee! Now that is lovely! You live in a giant lincoln-log house!

Was very excited to read your email on the fic post, BTW! go you! I'm not alone in the compulsion to follow different kinds of creative ambitions. Go you!

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! It does look like a Lincoln-log house, doesn't it? Thanks for your kind words.

Go us! :)

*is snow jealous*

we're just moving into autumn (which basically means temps below 30 degrees C! lol). at least the leaves change colour this far south in Oz...

* poochie *

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, autumn... I can't wait! Enjoy the changing leaves for me! :)

[identity profile] hapendfro.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
OK Im so jealous I know we both live in Middle Tenn and we got nothing, nada, zip in terms of snow. I think it may have snowed for about 15 min betweed 630am and 700am this morning. So how did you manage it. Any way the pictures are great it. I do wish we had had more. Dont you.

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! I'm so sorry you didn't get any snow. I agree with you - I wish we got more in this area. Ours had melted away by about 2pm yesterday afternoon, but we have another half inch or so, just a dusting, this morning.

I really wanted some winter before we got spring!

[identity profile] sneezythesquid.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Now that I've seen your house, I'm even more jelous of you.

That's it, I'm moving in! starts packing

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww! :) Thanks! My husband designed the place. We both love log homes with some woods around them.

C'mon on over! You're welcome anytime. :)

[identity profile] sneezythesquid.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh cool. Tenn, here I come!

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Of course you won't be admitted into Nashvegas without bringing rhinestones and a guitar. ;)

[identity profile] sneezythesquid.livejournal.com 2006-02-15 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Humm....I'll have to hit a pawn shop on the way in then. :D

I love that quote. Guh.

[identity profile] euclase.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Is that... an icon of mine? Where did you get that? I thought mine was gone forever!

Pictures are AWESOME. Snowy pine needles with your pretty house are gorgeous (it seems everyone is getting snow!), and are those the woods where the deer hang out? Absolutely magical.

*giggle* Virgina sooooo cutalicious.

Re: I love that quote. Guh.

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It certainly is an icon of yours. I adopted it the first time you had it up for grabs, along with the "'Tis the Season to Cuddle Hobbit" icons. That was right before Christmas '04, I think. Does that sound right? Is it okay that I'm still using it (with credit)?

Thanks for the kind words about the pictures. Those are indeed the woods where the deer hang out. You can see more at the far left of the house picture. In the woods shot, you may be able to make out a patch of reflection in the middle of the trees. That's the pond where they like to drink. Isn't it amazing how ice crystals can make everything seem magical?

Re: I love that quote. Guh.

[identity profile] euclase.livejournal.com 2006-02-13 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I DO see the pond, and how pretty that it's right there, close enough to spy on (and it totally look magical—as if that's where your local water nymphs have settled down).

Of course you can use the icon (interjects, "Wow! It's been over a year that we've known each other!"). Actually, if you don't mine, I'm going to snatch it back from you while I can, because I honestly thought I'd lost it. ♥

Re: I love that quote. Guh.

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
if that's where your local water nymphs have settled down

My husband has put large stone trolls/gnomes around the main lawn, just before the woods begin. I like to thing the faeries sunbathe on their foreheads. :)

Actually, if you don't mine, I'm going to snatch it back from you while I can, because I honestly thought I'd lost it.

Awesome! Do you need the "cuddle hobbits" one as well?

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, very nice indeed.

I love Winter too. It's my favourite season; my least favourite is summer, which I don't like at all.

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :) I'm with you - I'm no fan of summer at all. I keep hoping we can skip straight from early spring to autumn again! Maybe I need to live farther north. (Say, the Pole. LOL!)

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2006-02-13 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

I have to admit this was one of the things that really tipped the balance into moving to Scotland, the cooler summers. People kept saying 'but it's so much colder up there'. Our response was, 'Yes, lovely, isn't it?'

Not, I hasten to add that we've had a Winter anything like we were expecting. In fact parts of England have had more snow/been colder than we have!

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow. I really must go to Scotland. Of course I might decide never to leave! :)

[identity profile] st-crispins.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The snow gave me (finally) some time to finish our paper. It's in your email.

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you feel the warm and rosy glow of achievement now that the paper's done? Then again, it sounds like it might be too cold there for any warm and rosy glow... :) At any rate, thanks again for making this happen.

[identity profile] st-crispins.livejournal.com 2006-02-15 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Do you feel the warm and rosy glow of achievement

More relieved, actually.

Now, I have a little elbow room to write fic. :)

[identity profile] wildviolet4.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The snow always reminds me of a sugar frosting; there is something so quiet and peaceful about it. Your home is lovely ... and I assume Virginia is tired from the romping in the snow? LOL

In her honor, I offer this:

Canis Major

The great Overdog
That heavenly beast
With a star in one eye,
Gives a leap in the east.

He dances upright
All the way to the west
And never once drops
On his forefeet to rest.

I;m a poor underdog,
Bit tonight I will bark
With the great Overdog
That romps through the dark.

--Robert Frost

[identity profile] wildviolet4.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
eeek!! A typo!!! 'but' not 'bit'

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, gorgeous! I love it. Thank you so much for sharing it.

Yes, Virginia did romp. She even cavorted. Then she shivered, and looked at me as if to say, "What are we thinking, being out here when it's warm and snuggly inside?" And then she took off for the front door, with me sliding along in her tracks. LOL!

[identity profile] estellye.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Beautiful and highly appropriate quote!

You have a lovely home EH, and Virginia is even a good model when she is zonked! It shouldn't be possible to be that adorable, lol!

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much for your very kind words!

Virginia does suffer from an overactive cute gene. She can be sick, sleepy, disgruntled, or dirty, and still she is too cute for words. But we love her anyway. LOL!

[identity profile] melissagay.livejournal.com 2006-02-13 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, these are breathtaking! You live in a lovely place!

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you are so kind! Thank you so much. :)

[identity profile] terrylj.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely beautiful!

And I'm all with the puppy, cold weather makes me want to cuddle up with a blanket by a fireplace and pass out.

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-14 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! :)

I know what you mean. In fact, I could do with a fuzzy blankie and a mug of cocoa at the moment, myself!
