"I read my eyes out"

I am back from a successful colloquium in Indianapolis (which included an unexpected and thoroughly fantastic opportunity to see Lyle Lovett perform at a private industry party in the hotel in which I was staying), a bit under the weather and very much behind reading everyone's posts. I hope all is well with you, my friends!

In the meantime, a few quick notes:

*The SciFiDimensions Podcast has a particularly insightful interview with Cory Doctorow, author of the "must read" new novel Little Brother, here. I highly recommend listening.

* The July/August issue of the Saint Austin Review is completely dedicated to essays, reviews, and artwork
related to J.R.R. Tolkien.

* As it turns out, my article "Florida's Forgotten Rebels: Rediscovering the Most Successful Slave Revolt in American History" did not win the 2008 Southern California Journalism Award, but the Los Angeles Press Club did give it the Honorable Mention for "Best Entertainment Review/Criticism/Column." Of course I was thrilled even to be named a finalist, so the Honorable Mention came as a happy surprise.

Thanks for the welcome back! The party was more cool than sad, I think: it was an industry event, somehow (though I never got all the details) related to the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Show. The rumor was that it was the birthday of either Bob, Tom, or the wife of one of them. I got the impression that the legitimate attendees - in contrast to party crashers like yours truly - were mostly "in the business." At any rate, that man can play.
