"What in me casts shadows"
Dec. 22nd, 2008 10:00 amI have happy news to share!
I have agreed to write a book for Zossima Press for mid-2010 publication. At this point my working title is The Gothic Imaginations of J.R.R. Tolkien, Madeleine L'Engle, and J.K. Rowling. I'm pleased that this book will allow me to combine my interests in and research on the Gothic, Tolkien, L'Engle, Rowling, fantasy, and science fiction, and I'm looking forward to working with Zossima Press.
Since the end of the year is a good time to take measure of where we've been and where we're going, here (for my own benefit) is the tally:
Book (Written):
Tecumseh: A Biography with Greenwood Press
Book Chapter:
(co-authored with
st_crispins) "Sexy Nerds: Illya Kuryakin, Mr. Spock, and the Image of the Cerebral Hero in Television Drama" in Common Sense: Intelligence as Presented on Popular Television (edited by Lisa Holderman) with Lexington Press
Encyclopedia Entries:
* "J.R.R. Tolkien" in Women in Science Fiction and Fantasy: An Encyclopedia (edited by
robin_anne_reid) with Greenwood Press
* "Robert Heinlein" and "Rose Wilder Lane" in The Encyclopedia of Libertarianism (edited by Ronald Hamowy) with Sage Publications
Book (Edited):
Fantasy and Native America (co-edited with David Oberhelman) with Mythopoeic Press
Book Chapters:
* "'Art in Its Most Essential Sense': H.P. Lovecraft and the Imaginative Tale" in Cthulhu's Grandfather (edited by Geoffrey Girard) with Apex Books
* "When Harry Met Faerie: Rowling's Hogwarts, Tolkien's Fairy-Stories, and the Question of Readership" in The Hog's Head Conversations (edited by Travis Prinzi) with Zossima Press
* "Meeting at the Crossroads: Remarks on the Challenges Before Us" in Fantasy and Native America (co-edited with David Oberhelman) with Mythopoeic Press
In Egypt, I learned why the women drew black lines of kohl around their eyes: to produce shadow, to protect their eyes from the fierceness of the sun. We see because of the sun, but if there were no shadows that light would quickly blind us. We need the shadows of buildings to protect us at least a little from heat.
It has only recently struck me that we need our shadow-casters, metaphorically as well as physically. What in me casts shadows, and what kind?
- Madeleine L'Engle, from Parabola Magazine, Summer 1997
