Who am I and why am I here?
Nov. 22nd, 2004 12:27 pmSo. I've seen this in many journals, so I'll take a turn at it myself.
My journal is called _____ because _____.
My subtitle is _____ because _____.
My friends page is called _____ because _____.
My username is ____ because _____.
My default userpic is _____ because_____.
My LJ "name" is _____ because ______.
My journal is called "Redecorating Middle-Earth in Early Lovecraft" because it references two of my favorite authors, J.R.R. Tolkien and H.P. Lovecraft, both of whom wrote classic genre works; Tolkien called his fairy-stories while Lovecraft called his weird fiction. I think the two together exemplify some of the tensions and tastes evident in my own thought. The two men asked the same questions about the nature of history, industrialism, nationalism, urbanity, and humanity's place in the universe, but they came to radically different conclusions. Tolkien's answers centered around hope, religious faith, and a belief in mercy and redemption. Lovecraft's answers, on the other hand, created a rather bleak and hopeless picture of how small and insignificant we are in the larger scale of the material cosmos. Tolkien's work emphasizes sacrifice and virtue while Lovecraft's underscores mystery and dread. Loving the two and their worldviews simultaneously is a bit like having John Calvin and Ayn Rand forever arm-wrestling in your head. But that's me.
My subtitle is "Somewhere Between Coruscant and Bajor" because these two planets refer to my first two fandoms, Star Wars and Star Trek, respectively. These provided my pre-literate introduction to the world of science fiction, and they still are loves I hold dear.
My page for friends is called "The Council Chamber" because a council is wise and thoughtful, and thus I read and consider what my friends say. I think of The Jedi Council in this regard, though I should go on record as saying that I don't believe my friends to be either green or muppets, though I'm sure some of them could take Count Dooku to school if they were so inclined.
My username is eldritchhobbit again because the two parts of the name reference Lovecraft, who used the word "eldritch" like it was going out of style (in fact it had never been in style), and Tolkien, who created hobbits. And "weird halfling," I suspect, describes me fairly well. My LJ "name" is the same.
