Halloween Countdown 2018, Day 6
Oct. 6th, 2018 06:47 amPerhaps my favorite new podcast of 2018 is The Soundtrack Show with musicologist David W. Collins. For years I’ve followed Collins’s interviews and appearances on other podcasts, and I’m so thrilled that he now has his own! I have been a fan of film scores all of my life, but Collins’s analyses have taught me how to listen to them in an educated, informed way and appreciate them on so many levels. Thanks to Collins I know my Korngold from my Steiner, can recognize “Deus Irae” in its many guises, and get *even more joy* (if that’s possible) from the brilliant works of John Williams.
I highly recommend this wonderfully enlightening podcast. And if you’re looking for Halloween-centric listening, look no further than this episode on Universal Monster Music.
Here is the episode’s description:
"Universal created a rich cast of fascinating monsters … and evolved their film scoring techniques through the process.Through the creation of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and more, we hear the evolution of film scoring progress through each movie, culminating in some of the most important and innovative scores of the early 20th Century."
But wait! There’s more!
The latest episodes offer 1) a two-part riveting commentary on one of the greatest and scariest soundtracks of all time, the score for Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, and 2) a look at the music from the original Halloween.
Don’t miss this podcast!
