The last day of September!
Sep. 30th, 2009 09:21 amHappy birthday to a very hoopy frood,
vaklam. May you have a great day and a wonderful year to come!
Tomorrow will begin my month-long Halloween countdown, and I hope you will join me (and invite anyone else you know who might be interested) in celebrating Halloween here every day, throughout October. With only a couple of exceptions (for favorites that have become a tradition), all of the "spooky texts" that I will be posting are new to my countdown. I hope you will enjoy them!
Speaking of Halloween, I am pleased that The Library of America is releasing American Fantastic Tales: Terror and the Uncanny from Poe to Now, a two-volume boxed collection of the American Gothic tradition (from Edgar Allan Poe to today's masters of terror and the uncanny with 86 stories in all) in time for the holiday. It sounds like perfect October reading: bring it on!
I have a few links to share...
* AMC's miniseries remake of The Prisoner starring Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellan will run for two hours each night from November 15-17. Read more here.
* Here's an interesting interactive map of Banned and Challenged Books in the United States (2007-2009).
* From GeekDad at Wired: "Top Ten Unanswered Questions in Geeky Movies."
* Librivox.org has added several more free unabridged readings of interest to genre readers:
-- Short Science Fiction Collection #27 with stories by James Blish, Jack Vance, Harry Harrison, and others
-- Looking Backward: 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy
-- Michael Strogoff by Jules Verne
* I am looking forward to the "Star Wars in Concert" World Tour. We'll be catching the performance in Charlotte, NC. Here is the trailer:
"September fattens on vines.
Roses flake from the wall.
The smoke of harmless fires drifts to my eyes.
This is plenty. This is more than enough."
- Geoffrey Hill, September Song

Date: 2009-09-30 02:22 pm (UTC)Thanks for the banned books map - cool. Kind of low key here this year... The ACLU isn't doing the big "festival" they've done in the past - But the Book Festival is only a few weeks away, so \o/.

Date: 2009-10-01 01:24 pm (UTC)LOL. I know what you mean! What's that saying about the sincerest form of flattery? To be sure, one of the reasons I was so psyched about seeing this is that I thoroughly loved my experience of seeing Lord of the Rings in concert.
