Happy early birthday wishes to
brighteyed_jill. May you have many happy returns of the day!
* The new issue of Apex Magazine is now available, and its theme is the year 2012. Included are two dark and thought-provoking short stories, one by Genevieve Valentine and one by James F. Reilly, and an essay by yours truly that delves into the different ingredients that make up the 2012 popular phenomenon: "2012: The Good, The Bad, and the Apocalyptic." I had great fun writing this piece (thanks again to Managing Editor and all-around great guy
jasonsizemore for the invitation!), and I hope you read and enjoy!
To quote Dan Piraro:

* My latest StarShipSofa "History of the Genre" segment, which this month is about Anthony Trollope's all-but-forgotten science fiction dystopia, is now available in the latest episode of the podcast. You can download it or listen to it here. If you listen, I hope you enjoy. (A full list of my past podcast segments, with links, is available here.)
* Congratulations to my friends the Potter Pundits for winning the 2009 Leaky Award for "Favorite Leaky Moment" for their Harry Potter literary analysis segments on the PotterCast podcast. Way to go!
“One of the illusions of life is that the present hour is not the critical, decisive hour. Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year. No man has learned anything rightly, until he knows that every day is Doomsday.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Date: 2010-01-07 03:17 am (UTC)I enjoyed your essay. You hit the nail on the History Channel. It's actually been nicknamed the Hitler Channel by tv guide. :D I think that's actually when they started getting away from Hitler.
I didn't realize so many people/cultures were getting all wrapped up in this 2012 stuff. I just consider it another date on the calendar.
Just remembered, one of my aunts is going to this wacky church where the minister is convinced the world is going to end in 2011. Remember when everyone was convinced it would end in 2000? I just wonder what date they're going to come up with after 12/21/12 comes and goes.

Date: 2010-01-10 07:29 pm (UTC)It's amazing how so many different groups have jumped on the 2012 bandwagon. There are some strange bedfellows in that mix.
I remember those doomsday predictions for 2000! It will be interesting to see what happens this time when (if? *wink*) we're all here the following day, week, year. It was interesting, reading the religious blogs from different faiths. A lot of them seemed to start out with variations on "I know the [insert scripture of choice] says we can't know the exact time of the final days, BUT...." ;) It seems people have an endless appetite for doomsday-ing.
