* At the invitation of the Friends of the Rudisill Library, I will be giving my presentation "'I Take My Life in My Hand': A Tale of Two Cherokees and the Trail of Tears" at Lenoir-Rhyne University on Friday, March 12. I also will be signing books after my talk. The evening is free and open to the public. More information is here.

* This is very sad news indeed about a woman I've admired for many years: Former Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller has been diagnosed with stage IV metastatic pancreatic cancer. My heart goes out to her and her family.

* From Cheryl Morgan: "If you are looking for information from Chile or ways to help the relief effort, I’d like to recommend Gabriel Rodríguez. He’s the artist for the fabulous comic, Locke and Key, scripted by Joe Hill, and he lives in Chile. He has posted here about the situation, including a bunch of links to relevant charities."

What you said. She's been a hero to generations now, I think; she won't be soon forgotten, that's for certain. I've taught her autobiography several times, and my students are always impressed by her strength -- and by her description of dancing with her young daughters and singing along to Aretha Franklin's "R-E-S-P-E-C-T." :)

Your latest History of the Genre segment is impressive, even by your own high standards. I knew nothing about M. Cavendish, & I'm supposed to be an SF poet! However, I missed the links -- treadmill listening will do that. Can we find them somewhere?
