It's interesting, yes. It also concerns me although I lack a full understanding of the genre. It bothers me on two levels, tied to my perception that society is dumbing down in general and that escapist/lightweight fare is replacing quality fare. I enjoy a fanfic or light reading (such as a mystery) as much as anyone, but it occupies a certain place and I recognize it as such. I kind of feel that what is going on with regard to YA is the equivalent of local TV news ("if it bleeds it leads") taking the place of researched, written news that discuss events within context. How many steps are we away from Harrison Bergeron's world? But I realize I am "judging" without having taken the time to perhaps really understand. For all I know, Catcher in the Rye is categorized as YA now!

*stops whining and goes off to read a fanfic* ;o)
