John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe? Here's the new trailer for the forthcoming (March 2012) film The Raven. What do you think?

Text of the Day: Today's reading is a the short story "The Leather Funnel" by the great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930).

Excerpt: My friend, Lionel Dacre, lived in the Avenue de Wagram, Paris. His house was that small one, with the iron railings and grass plot in front of it, on the left-hand side as you pass down from the Arc de Triomphe. I fancy that it had been there long before the avenue was constructed, for the grey tiles were stained with lichens, and the walls were mildewed and discoloured with age. It looked a small house from the street, five windows in front, if I remember right, but it deepened into a single long chamber at the back. It was here that Dacre had that singular library of occult literature, and the fantastic curiosities which served as a hobby for himself, and an amusement for his friends. A wealthy man of refined and eccentric tastes, he had spent much of his life and fortune in gathering together what was said to be a unique private collection of Talmudic, cabalistic, and magical works, many of them of great rarity and value. His tastes leaned toward the marvellous and the monstrous, and I have heard that his experiments in the direction of the unknown have passed all the bounds of civilization and of decorum.

I think I can't wait to see it! *g* I'm not sure I would have picked Cusack, but since I really enjoy his work, I'm willing to give it a try.

Wow that looks really creepy and really fascinating! I'm not sure who I'd have picked for old Edgar, but the movie looks like it's well done.

I think they give away Tahmoah as the villain in the trailer.

BTW ... have you seen Dream House (Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Elias Koteas) yet? If not, you should. Good flick.

Me, too! That's my thought exactly. :)

I'll be anxious to see it. I wouldn't have chosen Cusack, but I'm definitely willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and see how it is. I loved seeing so many references to Poe's stories just in those little clips in the trailer.

Oooh! I realize now that I've read one of his stories in a collection and enjoyed it; it's great to have a list of more to track down! Thank you so much for this.

Good point!

I haven't seen Dream House; I haven't read much about it. Thanks so much for the rec! That's all I needed to know. It's definitely going on my list now... ;)

It looks interesting, though like Dodger Winslow, I think I can guess who the perp is. I would like to know whose voice that is at the very beginning; sounds very familiar.

I absolutely love the look of this movie! I only wish that John had taken on the lovely, Southern Virginian accent of Edgar Allan Poe. That would have made it just that much more authentic.

Oh, what do I think? Edgar Allen Poe! John Cusack! Steampunky! I'm thinking - oh, I'm thinking - Ack! what does coming soon mean?!? I think I can't wait!

I'm actually glad John Cusack hasn't attempted a southern accent. I suppose I should give him the benefit of the doubt, but since he's also from Wisconsin, I can imagine, that a Virginia accent would be difficult to pull of convincingly.

I agree - on both counts!

I agree on both counts. I'm rather fond of Jeffery Combs's take on Poe (complete with the accent), but I'm going to give this a try anyway...

March 2012! ACK!

You make a very good point: better to have no accent than a poorly-executed one.

I looked in the IMDB credits and there's two names that jumped out at me: Brendan Gleeson and Kevin McNally. I'm leaning toward Gleeson, but not real sure about it. You'll have to let me know when you see it. ;~)

As regards the revealing of the perp in the trailer, it could always be a red herring, but there has been rather a lot of that, giving up the ending in the trailer, or so I have heard. Weird kind of reverse psychology I guess.
