Today's quote is from "The Haunted House" by George MacDonald:

THIS must be the very night!
The moon knows it!--and the trees--
They stand straight upright,
Each a sentinel drawn up,
As if they dared not know
Which way the wind might blow!
The very pool, with dead gray eye,
Dully expectant, feels it nigh,
And begins to curdle and freeze!
And the dark night,
With its fringe of light,
Holds the secret in its cup!

II. What can it be, to make
The poplars cease to shiver and shake,
And up in the dismal air
Stand straight and stiff as the human hair
When the human soul is dizzy with dread--
All but those two that strain
Aside in a frenzy of speechless pain,
Though never a wind sends out a breath
To tunnel the foggy rheum of death?
What can it be has power to scare
The full-grown moon to the idiot stare
Of a blasted eye in the midnight air?
Something has gone wrong;
A scream will come tearing out ere long!...

Oooh, I've never read that before! That is awesome!!! Every line is a jewel of horror. Or, perhaps I should say, a shining trapezohedron of horror. :)

I hadn't seen it, either. Very cool!

"trapezohedron" Nice. =)

Lovecraft was a genius who recognized that the innate evil of the trapezoid approaches infinity when projected into three dimensions.

ROFLOL!

Because nothing says horror quite like non-Euclidian geometry. It's chilling. It's transdimensional madness at its Cyclopean best.

You two are way too much fun!! Any chance I'll see you at PhreakNIC?

More of MacDonald's "The Haunted House" tomorrow!

Oh, hooray!! I'm loving "The Haunted House!" Tell me more about MacDonald-- my horror education is remiss there!

Yes, we will definitely see you at Phreaknic! :-)

"It's transdimensional fun at its Cyclopean best."

Wow! I feel so honored to be sigfile-worthy. :) Can't wait to see you and say hi this weekend.

MacDonald was a 19th-century Scottish novelist, poet, clergyman, and author of children's stories. I'm not extremely familiar with all of his work, but I know he wrote fairy stories for children, and some fantasy for adults (such as Phantastes and The Golden Key), along with nonfiction. I do love the building creepiness of this poem!
