Happy birthday, H.P. Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937).

Lovecraft

"Nor is it to be thought, that man is either the oldest or the last of earth's masters, or that the common bulk of life and substance walks alone. The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be. Not in the spaces we know, but between them, They walk serene and primal, undimensioned and to us unseen.... Man rules now where They ruled once; They shall soon rule where man rules now. After summer is winter, and after winter summer. They wait patient and potent, for here shall They rule again."
- H.P. Lovecraft, The Dunwich Horror

sometimes, outside of the beauty and meaning of the entire statement they make, words are set in such a way as to be jewels of brilliant beauty in and of themselves. This is one of those times.

A couple of Lovecraft related links. First, Cracked recently had an article about stories which destroy your image of the people who wrote them. In this case, it mentions the time Lovecraft wrote a wacky romantic comedy. I recall when I first read it in The Complete H.P. Lovecraft, it had me wondering if it was some sort of prank on the editor's part.

On the Kickstarter front, I've come across a Cthulhu-themed version of the ancient Viking game Hnefatafl aka King's Table.

I read that wacky romance comedy a while back after being told it was such (so I didn't worry about the editor or expect eldrich abominations to jump out any time now), and it was positively hilarious.

That is wonderful and terrify, both the reasons I got into Lovecraft in high school.

Love the Kickstarter! And I know exactly what you mean about wondering if that romantic comedy was a prank on the editor's part! Thanks so much for the article link.

Isn't it a great photo? Not mine, I'm sorry to say - I don't have these particular editions. I really liked the way the spines looked in this shot!

Isn't it a great passage? Yay for Lovecraft! And yay for those of us who got into him, too! :D

Joshi doesn't pull any punches, does he? OUCH. I confess that I giggled a few times, especially at the "We laughed, and hoped he’d soon be sane again."

Personally I suspect Joshi went into this one thinking, "Some guy defending Derleth? I'm gonna rip him a new one!" Perhaps Robert M. Price could have offered something not so loaded with bile.
