Happy birthday to Frank Herbert (8 October, 1920 – 11 February, 1986)!

dune trilogy by frank herbert 1

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
- Frank Herbert, Dune (1965)

I remain petrified that one day I'm going to publicly say "Frank Herbert" when actually talking about George Herbert. I don't know why this haunts me so, it just does. >_>

Ha! I have the same fear about William S. Burroughs and Edgar Rice Burroughs. Of course, I have that fear because once I did slip up and say one while thinking of the other in public. For a while there, everyone (including me) was completely confused. *blushes*

I have also done that!!!! On the plus side it was a Facebook conversation at like 11pm, so I didn't get called on it until the next day AND I had a decent excuse. But still.

Good quote for Halloween month. I should re-read Dune some day.

My favorite quote from one of my favorite series!

I love the first and third of the Dune books, but I lost interest in the subsequent sequels. I read as far as God-Emperor of Dune, and couldn't go on after that.

Makes note to self—must revisit the fear mantra once more. I used to know it by heart, but I haven't thought of it in many years.

I read those books so many years ago that much has been forgotten. I think I got as far as the seventh or eighth book before it got to be too much. I think that's where my aversion to long series of books comes from. *g*

Still, the first three were masterpieces. Hurrah for Mr. Herbert!

Of the two adaptations, I find the Harrison miniseries superior in most every way to the Lynch film. As well as the fact that it sticks closer to the source material, there are all the important details, like Gurney Halleck is actually ugly and Duncan Idaho (at least according to my sister) is actually a stud. However, I said most. The one aspect where the Lynch film wins is with Dr. Yueh. The miniseries Yueh was comparatively underdeveloped and the actor gave a substandard performance.

Yay! I do love me some Dune. As you say, it's very re-readable.

I'll confess to loving all six of the original novels - I thought Chapterhouse brought all the arcs around very well - but I can't stomach the ones written by Herbert's son and Kevin J. Anderson.

The fear mantra is brilliant, isn't it?

LOL! My advice: stick to the six Herbert wrote himself. Avoid all the others (by his son and Kevin J. Anderson) like the plague. ;)

Hurrah for Mr. Herbert, indeed!

Great point about Dr. Yueh. I agree wholeheartedly.

I'll confess to more tolerance (appreciation, maybe) for Lynch's version, but I also recognize that has a lot to do with how old I was when I saw it, and the nostalgia factor it had for me. Fortunately, I'd already read the six novels, so I could appreciate the craziness, too (Patrick Stewart was so wildly miscast). But still. I'll confess, though, that Richard Jordan was a stud in his own right.

Also, Francesca Annis as Lady Jessica is now my headcanon.

BTW, the first car I ever owned was named Duncan for Duncan Idaho (the book character, not the film character, stud or no).

I am *so* sorry for being so rude; I've fallen behind in my email and I hope to catch up this weekend. I did indeed. The photos were fantastic! I especially loved the one of Tim standing on the chair looking eye-to-eye with Donovan. Priceless! Thank you so much for sharing them with me.

Like @chorale above, I couldn't get past God Emperor. But I have read Dune a couple times, and I've seen the David Lynch film a bunch of times. (I think I'm one of the few people who actually liked that movie...)

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Lynch film, I must admit!
