"Staying Sane"
Jan. 24th, 2005 07:52 pm* I have accepted a kind invitation to contribute to the forthcoming 2006 Routledge volume The J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia: Scholarship and Critical Assessment. I've been excited about this project ever since I first heard it announced, and I'm very pleased I was given the chance to participate in it. At the moment it looks like I will be writing the entries on Renewal, the Shaping of Middle-Earth, and - get this - The Lord of The Rings. That's everything you need to know about LOTR in 4,000 words. Go ahead and laugh. When that word count actually sinks in, I'll be laughing, too - in a kind of manic, hysterical way.
* The saga of the new Man from U.N.C.L.E. film is getting ever more interesting (thanks in large part to the fans of the original series). You can see here the first Variety article and, after fan response, the second Variety article.
* I am gratified to see that Television Without Pity has added the new Battlestar Galactica series to its list of victims. The only thing better than SF snark is more SF snark.
And now, a quote for the day, from a book that just grows more relevant with age:
"He was a lonely ghost uttering a truth that nobody would ever hear. But so long as he uttered it, in some obscure way the continuity was not broken. It was not by making yourself heard but by staying sane that you carried on the human heritage."
- George Orwell, 1984

Of course, it gets interesting when you mix Taoism with Discordianism.

Date: 2005-01-25 04:32 am (UTC)And thanks for the kind words re: the encyclopedia entries. I'll be one of many contributors, but I can't help but be happy I was asked. They'll certainly have no excuse if they don't end up with a brilliant cover, that's for sure!

Date: 2005-01-25 04:09 am (UTC)Oh please, friend me! I really wanted to friend you too.:) Oh, and I just watched Robocop 3, which has John Castle in it! He makes an excellent villain.

Date: 2005-01-25 06:43 am (UTC)Hello:) I've glad we've 'met' too! The internet is very handy for this sort of thing, I probably would never have met another person who liked John Castle, and what a sad thought that is...
Oh yeh, I enjoyed Robocop 3, I admire villains who are clever. Of course, if I have a certain fondness for them...sometimes I want them to win.
Ah, fine Castle moments indeed. I really am going to have to get Lion In Winter again soon. It's been far too long.:)

Date: 2005-01-25 04:41 pm (UTC)2) Someone slap Vaughn around. I'm sick of these "The only thing we kept is the name" treatments of things I like.
3) I really like the new Galactica, tho I still dislike the new Starbuck. It's not that I think they shouldn't have changed him to a her, but that they hired a woman who a) can't act & b) can't carry off the role. The latest episode, when Apollo (II) stood up to Adama & the President ("and I don't owe either of you a damn thing") is what sealed the deal for me with this new version of the show.
4) There is no fourth item.
5) Very cool quote.

Date: 2005-01-25 07:54 pm (UTC)2) I couldn't agree more. If they want something totally new, why use the name at all? Go be original.
3) Starbuck is okay with me, but the new Apollo seems to suck the life out of every scene he's in. I'm really underwhelmed by him. I think the scene you describe would have been much more powerful if the line were delivered by someone who could act. (Adama and the President are both doing a terrific job, I think.) Still, I'm really fascinated by the direction they're taking the series. And the way they worked in Richard Hatch was fantastic.
4) Okay, I'll make up my own item, then. Were Gaius Baltar and Deep Space Nine's Dr. Bashir separated at birth, or what?
5) Thanks. :)

Date: 2005-01-25 11:50 pm (UTC)2) This is Hollywood. Originality is in the same "no-no" box they also tend to keep "Plot" in. ;)
3) Richard Hatch rocks. I still wish we could have seen his version of the followup to Galactica. Still, at least he's involved now. I got to chat with him at Dragon*Con back in '03, and he's hell of a nice guy.
4) Both in looks, and in characterization. I'd play the "rip-off" card, but since the same guy was behind both shows...
I can't wait to find out if he's just crazy, or if the Cylons implanted something in him that's making him see Hot Cylon Babe. I'm also curious to see where they're going with the storyline of the guy stuck on Caprica with Boomer II.
5) See 1. ;)

Date: 2005-01-28 02:04 am (UTC)Yes indeed! I'm totally fascinated by the Baltar situation, and the Caprica subplot. I like the arc nature of the series, and the unanswered questions are definitely keeping me coming back for more!
