It's raining birthdays! Happy birthday to the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] jasonbsizemore and [livejournal.com profile] dannyboy8406 today, the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] dracschick and [livejournal.com profile] juxiantang tomorrow, and the magnificent [livejournal.com profile] wellinghall the day after tomorrow. All of you deserve to have terrific birthdays, and many more to come!

* In other news, my article "Florida's Forgotten Rebels: Rediscovering the most successful slave revolt in American history," from the April 2007 issue of Reason, is now online at the magazine's website. (My past articles for Reason are available here.)

* Apparently The "Life Is Too Grim Already" League is the latest literary movement in science fiction, followed closely by the New Comprehensible and New Space Princess movements. Ah, remember the heady days of the Mundane Science Fiction debate with Geoff Ryman and Ian McDonald, complete with manifestos?

To me, one of the strengths of SF is that it is an allegorical literature: parables and myths of our age. - Ian McDonald

I rather like the "not grim" idea - I'm all for it! I like a little adventure and angst here and there, but the world is so filled with the real stuff, I like finding good reading that takes me *out* of that world and into more cheery or satisfying place overall. :-)

Thanks again for your posts, they always have something interesting in them.

The ungrims and the comprehensibles both make more sense to me than the mundanes (didn't that used to be like muggles?) on a serious level but you can't help rooting for the space princessers, baby, yeah! Because they speak trufax about The Shadow.
