Lenoir-Rhyne in Springtime

First, I have a few quick links to share:
* Audible.com is currently holding a half-price sale (for one week only) on over 1,000 unabridged audiobooks, including works by authors such as Gaston Leroux, Robert Heinlein, and Ray Bradbury.
* The Locus Awards Finalists have been announced, and they form an impressive list. Winners will be honored in June at the Locus Awards Ceremony in Seattle, June 16th, during the Science Fiction Museum's Hall of Fame weekend.
* Marleen Barr, a genre scholar who taught at Virginia Tech for 14 years, wrote a thought-provoking letter to Locus about last week's shooting massacre and its implications for the writing and teaching of extreme genre fiction.
Next, as many of you know, we are relocating to Hickory, NC, where my husband will be Executive V.P. of Lenoir-Rhyne College. You can take a virtual tour of the campus here. Since this includes "up close" pictures of individual buildings, I took some more of the campus as a whole while we were driving by there this weekend. They don't cover the entire campus, but at least they give a sense of the feel of the place. Spring has sprung in North Carolina!
...If Stephen King enters a time machine, appears in Nikki's class as a young student, and writes as he customarily does, could Lucinda as department head justifiably remove him from class? Or, more generally speaking, consider this possible story opening: Once upon a time, feminist extraterrestrials killed all the male human astronauts who landed on their feminist utopian planet. Should the author of this sentence be barred from Cape Canaveral because she poses a clear and present danger to male astronauts? [Please know that on the evening after I wrote this sentence, Larry King reported that a shooting incident had occurred at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. I did not for a moment worry that a feminist science fiction writer was responsible for this act.] Or, more personally speaking, the penultimate scene of Oy Pioneer! describes the feminist protagonist's extraterrestrial clones arriving in spaceships to circle the Blackhole State University administration building. Thus it is. What would happen if Marleen S. Barr had written this scene post April 16, 2007 instead of when she was thirty-four years old?

Date: 2007-04-25 02:36 pm (UTC)I agree about Marleen Barr's letter. I don't envy those educators who are put in the situation of interpreting their students' writings in a self-defensive way. I'm not sure how one can make the distinction, as you say, between scripting life and simply expressing an artistic vision. What if someone read Poe's short stories today, for example? How would they be interpreted? And poor Poe was a devoted husband who never hurt anyone but himself.

Just keep going west and you hit Asheville, and then Smoky Mountain Park. That far southwest corner of North Carolina has an incredible concentration of waterfalls, btw; you can buy a book listing them all and "collect" them. Enjoy!
