My apologies for being so quiet of late. Between giving and grading final exams, packing for the move, making numerous trips back and forth from Tennessee to North Carolina, and attending end-of-semester and farewell events, I've been somewhat overwhelmed. It's hard to believe we will be moved into our new home in less than two weeks! We're quite excited.

Happy Mother's Day to everyone who is a mother (biological, step, or otherwise, to two-footed or four-footed children)!

In other news, the 2007 winners of the Nebula Awards were announced last night:
* Novel: Seeker by Jack McDevitt
* Novella: "Burn" by James Patrick Kelly
* Novelette: "Two Hearts" by Peter S. Beagle
* Short Story: "Echo" by Elizabeth Hand
* Script: Howl's Moving Castle by Hayao Miyazaki, Cindy Davis Hewitt, and Donald H. Hewitt
* Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction or Fantasy: Magic or Madness by Justine Larbalestier

"All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his."

I've heard that Wilde quote before and totally agree.

Good luck with the move!

I don't know if you like Ursula Vernon's work, but I thought this example might amuse you:

Miyazaki has sometimes been called the Japanese Walt Disney. A lot of anime fans could explain how that's a load of BS perpetrated by a clueless American media (for example, their views on organized labor and the advancement of technology are completely opposite). But one trait they do share is that they can adapt a book to the screen and mangle it beyond recognition. Having actually read the book by Diana Wynne Jones, I cringed through most of Howl's Moving Castle. It was a completely different (and inferior) story that happened to have a few lines lifted from the source material. The only redeeming aspect was Billy Crystal's performance as Calcifer.

That's funny: I've heard the exact same thing about Howl's Moving Castle and its unfaithfulness to the original story. I confess I haven't seen it (and that's part of the reason why).

At least it has the redeeming feature of Billy Crystal!

What makes it all the more infuriating is that the other nominees are all better. Well I can't say that with complete certainty for the Battlestar Galactica episode Unfinished Business, as I've not seen it due to being a member of the Fifteen Percent. But Batman Begins was truly awesome and the Doctor Who episode The Girl in the Fireplace was great fun. I mean clockwork robots! And the scene where the Doctor returns from a shindig at Versailles was hilarious.

Ha! I know one thing: unpacking has got to be more fun than packing! Overall, it's exciting, though - I'm really looking forward to next week. Congrats again on your lovely new house!
