And last but not least, Happy Father's Day to everyone who is a father (biological, step, or otherwise, to two-footed or four-footed children)!

There's something like a line of gold thread running through a man's words when he talks to his daughter, and gradually over the years it gets to be long enough for you to pick up in your hands and weave into a cloth that feels like love itself.

And naturally the comment I should have made only occurs to me on the figurative staircase; my mum gave me Children of Hurin!

Eh. Having the Teméraire series be issued in a single volume is an odd literary choice, though I suppose it's the sort that a marketing department could scarcely resist: Black Powder War ends on a major cliffhanger and is hard to read as other than the first half of a two-volume novel, whose second half will presumably now have to go into a second single-volume omnibus. Novik's readers are not well served by this. Having the Locus Award go to the three-in-one strikes me as evidence of poor judgment on the part of Locus's readers, not to mention that Locus's staff were silly to allow the nomination in the first place, given that the award is supposed to be for a "novel," and you don't turn two-and-a-half novels into one by cramming them into an omnibus.

All of which is said without disputing the quality of Novik's writing, which deserves recognition.
