"The mornings blossom into noons"
Aug. 26th, 2007 08:40 amHappy birthday to
super_chik! I hope you have a great day and many more to come.
In other news...
* The promised remake of The Prisoner isn't happening. I think I am relieved.
* SilkSoundBooks has added some new, unabridged readings of classic novels (including Susannah York's reading of Elizabeth Gaskell's My Lady Ludlow).
* Locus has posted Heinlein at 100: A Roundtable Discussion with John Clute, Gary K. Wolfe, Graham Sleight, and Charles N. Brown.
It makes no difference abroad,
The seasons fit the same,
The mornings blossom into noons,
And split their pods of flame.
Wild-flowers kindle in the woods,
The brooks brag all the day;
No blackbird bates his jargoning
For passing Calvary.
Auto-da-fe and judgment
Are nothing to the bee;
His separation from his rose
To him seems misery.
- Emily Dickinson

My dream is that I'll be reading that quote again sometime soon in relation to the ill-advised Life on Mars remake... :::shudder:::

Date: 2007-08-28 06:11 pm (UTC)It is, I think, the best series ever made for television. It's certainly one of the most original and visionary.
Were there reports indicating that it would be totally screwed up?
Unfortunately, yes. I'd actually allowed myself to get excited about a couple of earlier attempts that ended up stillborn - I agree, remakes aren't necessarily a bad thing - but this particular venture seemed to be the product of a committee, and every few months there were reports to the tune of "of course, even though we're calling it The Prisoner, we won't be keeping X," until I wasn't sure what was left of the original premise. Also, the original producer/writer/director/star Patrick McGoohan wasn't involved, even as an advisor. He's not rigid: he's proved to be rather flexible in how he's allowed artists and writers to elaborate on the series since its original airing. So the fact they weren't even consulting him, when it was his baby, sent up a red flag, above and beyond the ever more troubling rumors. I'm glad they gave the idea up, rather than muddling through it.
