First, re: the news of Peter Jackson and the Hobbit films:
I will be curious to see how these projects unfold. Overall, my feelings are mixed. I've explained many of the reasons for this here. Additionally, there are the unresolved questions of who will direct the films, who will adapt the texts, and what, exactly, the prequel movie will encompass. At any rate, it certainly will be interesting to see how the films develop.
(Incidentally, the official Hobbit Movie Blog is syndicated for LJ as
thehobbitfilm.)
Second, re: Harry Potter:
If you haven't heard J.K. Rowling's interview (the first of two parts) on Pottercast, I highly recommend it!
This is what I have heard
at last the wind in December
lashing the old trees with rain
unseen rain racing along the tiles
under the moon
wind rising and falling
wind with many clouds
trees in the night wind
- W.S. Merwin

Date: 2007-12-20 04:47 am (UTC)Seriously, I hope you are right in that eventually others will tackle this wonderful story and that there will be more than one serious film adaptation of Tolkien's beautiful works. (I think if there were more to view, contemplate, compare and contrast, etc., I could eventually be partly reconciled to the PJ version.)

Date: 2007-12-20 01:36 pm (UTC)I don't see how there could fail to be more. We already have Rankin-Bass, Bakshi, and Jackson, and filmmaking is only now starting to gain the tools necessary to capture (some) visions of Middle-Earth. I will want to see it all, because I think I learn something even from the wrong-headed interpretations; and, of course, I'll want to know which parts of the movie to denounce vehemently to everyone I see! LOL.
