eldritchhobbit: (Geoffrey/Lion in Winter/Much to Remember)
[personal profile] eldritchhobbit
Before I launch into a couple of not-so-breaking news items, I must brag for a moment on my university and say that the drama students and faculty outdid themselves with a very fine production of The Lion in Winter. And I am not saying that just because I have Prince Geoffrey in class. In fact, you may remember it is both my favorite play and film, so I am a tough audience. My husband and I saw it last weekend, and followed it up with a lovely Italian dinner and then a home viewing of the BBC performance of Shakespeare's The Life and Death of King John (an underappreciated play, in my humble opinion), which picked up the story of the Plantagenets years later and also provided me with my necessary dose of John Castle (who portrayed the Earl of Salisbury and managed to turn on a dime from sword-wielding intimidation to wet-eyed regret with typical brilliance). Seeing the two plays and their very different portrayals of the times and characters was quite a lot of fun -- and food for thought during this week's flu-induced stupor.

Now, on to a couple of fannish news items.

* The longstanding fan club Several Unlimited is gearing up for its annual Internet Zine Sale in April, and has already begun its Early Bird Sale. I've bought and sold gently used fanzines through Several Unlimited's Internet Sale for a good many years. The people are a pleasure to deal with, and I've found some great zines in a number of different universes/categories through them. I highly recommend checking out or participating in their sales.

* I suspect everyone knows about this already, but just in case, I wanted to mention The Directorium, which is a new structured, searchable and easily updatable directory of fannish sites. Since it is a wiki site, it lets everyone edit all of the listings, eliminating the problem of dead links that seems to plague every directory site. This site is growing buy leaps and bounds, and it promises to be a terrific resource.

And now, a quote for the day:

When you find the hidden catch
in the secret drawer
behind the false panel
inside the concealed compartment
in the desk in the attic
of the house in the dark forest,
and press the spring firmly,
a door flies open to reveal
a bundle of old letters,
and in one of them
is a map
of the forest
that you drew yourself
before you ever went there.

Ooooh. Nice! I just got the recent LIW remake from Netflix. I need to watch it. I would love to see the play. The only SLU production I remember is a butchering of A Midsummer Night's Dream. At least they had a very hot male dance student playing Oberon and he was wearing not TOO much more than sparkles. Very...mesmerizing.

LOL! Well, if they're going to butcher a play, they should at least be mesmerizing while doing it! :)

Hi there! ::waves:: Mmmm, you read Heinlein and Asimov and all sorts of interesting folks, don't you? Fantastic! Thanks so much for posting! I agree with you wholeheartedly about the Le Guin quote. It gives me shivers, too! :) She is wonderful.

::waves back:: I do gravitate to science fiction and fantasy. I'm relatively new to LJ and the concept of fandom though. Hope you don't mind me poking my nose in your journal occasionally, I'm still not sure of the etiquette surrounding these things.

Oh, please do poke your nose in whenever you like, and if it's okay with you I'll return the favor. :) It sounds like we have several interests in common -- it's great to "meet" you!

Neat quote!!!

Oh and I gave the info about the CS Lewis conference to my pastor's wife (he was sick that day) and she's really excited about it. I told her about the request for papers too and she seemed really enthused about it. I would be extremely suprised if they don't come.

And...she was excited to see that Doug Grisham will be speakin as apparently she's been corresponding by e-mail with him lately. And...her and her husband just recently returned from a trip to England so their CS Lewis tank is rather full at the moment. LOL!!

Isn't the quote amazing? And thanks SO much for passing the word along about the CSL conference. I'm so excited that your pastor and his wife may come (and even submit a paper, perhaps!). That's wonderful news. It sounds like they are in the middle of all things Lewisian at the moment(!!!), so it's good timing all the way around. Thanks again - I look forward to the chance of meeting them! I really do thank you for getting the word out about this.

Thanks! :) And yes, I am well and truly hooked on "The Beekeeper"! Now if only she'd come to Nashville during her tour. (She usually does, but it's not listed thus far. ::fingers crossed::) These songs are so great!

Thanks for the link to The Directorium! I hadn't come across it previously - such a lot of fandoms listed there!

Another great quote also. Something I had to read through twice to really take it in.
