Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] bellatook and happy early birthday to [livejournal.com profile] thepirateship! May you both enjoy a fabulous day and many more to come!

Two quick things:

* The latest episode of Lost: What Will Happen Next? mixes the worlds of Lost and Harry Potter:

(You can see previous episodes, which mix Lost with Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean, here.)

* I have a movie to suggest for those of you who don't mind a bit of horror in your drama: Borderland. It's based on a grisly true story about the ritual sacrifice killings of student vacationers conducted by a group of drug dealers in Mexico in 1989. The movie is more of an art house crime drama than a slasher pic, however, and it's beautifully filmed and acted. There are a few scenes of intense violence, which chronicle the killings, but most of the film is psychological in nature and dependent on building suspense. Sean Astin's chilling Dennis Hopper-esque performance as a crazed and murderous gang member, in particular, is absolutely riveting to watch. (I find him to be an underrated actor, and it's lovely to see him get an opportunity to show his range like this.) You can hear an interview with co-writer and director Zev Berman at Art Film Talk here. So, if you like your films well made and a tad disturbing, I highly recommend it.

And a quote for the day:

"I want to write about people I love, and put them into a fictional world spun out of my own mind, not the world we actually have, because the world we actually have does not meet my standards. Okay, so I should revise my standards; I'm out of step. I should yield to reality. I have never yielded to reality. That's what SF is all about. If you wish to yield to reality, go read Philip Roth; read the New York literary establishment mainstream bestselling writers….This is why I love SF. I love to read it; I love to write it. The SF writer sees not just possibilities but wild possibilities. It's not just 'What if' - it's 'My God; what if' - in frenzy and hysteria. The Martians are always coming."
- Philip K. Dick

I love that quote too. Reality is for people who can't handle science fiction. *wink*

I agree. I think reality is for people who can't handle science fiction. ;)

And yes, I do love Sean Astin. What can I say? (Take off the band, Harrison Bergeron!)

Thanks for the note about Borderland! I hadn't heard of it, though I remember the case it was based on. Almost made me want to go get someone's brain for a nganga.

That case must've freaked out the public! How bizarre is that, to marry the occult practices with the drug running?

Almost made me want to go get someone's brain for a nganga.

Eeeeewwwww! ;) The visuals from the film are still rather fresh in my mind. *shudder*
