* May I share some news? I came home from my trip to learn something utterly unexpected: I am a finalist for the Greater Southern California Press Club Award in the "Entertainment Reviews/Criticism/Column" category for my article "Florida's Forgotten Rebels: Rediscovering the Most Successful Slave Revolt in American History" in Reason Magazine. The winners will be announced on June 21. More details are here. I certainly didn't see that coming!

* Robert Asprin, R.I.P.
Science fiction and fantasy writer Robert Asprin, born 1946, died on May 22, 2008 at his home in New Orleans. Asprin's first novel was the science fiction The Cold Cash War (1977), but he was best known as creator and editor of the Thieves' World series of braided anthology/novels, and as author of numerous comic fantasy novels including series beginning with Another Fine Myth... (1978) and Phule's Company (1990). His latest book is Dragons Wild (2008), first book in another new series. Asprin won a Locus Award in 1982 for anthology Shadows of Sanctuary and he won two Balrog Awards, for that book and for anthology Storm Season the following year. Read more here.

Wow! What great news! The article was very interesting, too. I am definitely going to check out that site. What an amazing story and almost nobody knows about it.

I was watching a documentary on the history of the Capital Building in DC and it was discouraging with all the artwork depicting the history of the country that there was only ONE representation of an African American (a bust of Martin Luther King) very few women (the three key suffragettes and a Native American statue from Nebraska, which is the only statuary of a Native American) and apparently it was like pulling teeth to get them included. The only other Native American representations are about 50% negative and violent. I think they are working on a better actual representation of America, but it is slower than it should be in my opinion.

I chose Mary Tyler Moore and Michael Stipe, lol.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. The credit should go to that site; it is so well done, and I think it's a terrific example of how the internet can and should be used by historians to interest and educate fellow professionals, students, and interested laypeople alike.

That documentary sounds fascinating - and disheartening, too. It makes me wonder how much the old adage "out of sight, out of mind" figures into the national consciousness. I mean, have there been no women role models/leaders since the suffragettes? "Slower than it should be," indeed. And speaking of negative portrayals of Native Americans, I was somewhat horrified while in Cleveland to find myself walking under a massive billboard for the baseball team, which sported the most ridiculous caricature I've ever seen as the mascot. It's painful to look at! And I don't think one needs to be Native to see that; I mean, the "Little Black Sambo" image is pretty much disturbing to most people regardless of their race, isn't it? So much so that you don't see it on any billboards...

Aw, I'm so sorry - I didn't mean to go all melodramatic or anything! Thanks for being concerned, and for beings so supportive. I appreciate it. This really is one of those cases in which I'm extremely honored just to have made it to the "finalist" stage.

Yeah, the "sexy vegetarian" award is rather bizarre, isn't it? But you knew I'd vote for Sean Astin, didn't you? Ha. :) I also love Emmylou Harris, not only because she's my husband's favorite singer, but also because she's one of the few women in the public eye I can think of who has let her hair go naturally grey. As someone who's now slowly but surely going grey herself (and not coloring), I think that's kind of cool. LOL!

Thanks! I don't have much of a choice these days...! But I am not going to color it. I agree wholeheartedly about admiring those women who choose to go grey and keep their long hair. I love that, and I plan to follow their example.

Sean Astin is indeed a vegetarian, and apparently he supports PDSA, for "pets in need of vets." Not that you should care, but there you go. ;)
