Happy birthday to
thehornedgod and
baylorsr, and happy Father's Day to all of you who father (both literally and figuratively) children of all varieties (two-legged and four-legged)!
I am back from a busy but rewarding time lecturing at Brown University. The highlight of my week was my tour of Lovecraftian sites in Providence. I've uploaded my photos, including the following:
The H.P. Lovecraft Memorial Plaque at Brown University

The churchyard of St. John's Episcopal Church

"The Shunned House"

View all of my pictures of Lovecraftian Providence here.
"Old Providence! It was this place and the mysterious forces of its long, continuous history which had brought him into being, and which had drawn him back toward marvels and secrets whose boundaries no prophet might fix. Here lay the arcana, wondrous or dreadful as the case might be, for which all his years of travel and application had been preparing him."
- H.P. Lovecraft, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward"

Date: 2008-06-15 05:40 pm (UTC)Perhaps now I should go read more Lovecraft so that I'll actually know what the cheese you're talking about all the time. Heh. As of right now I've only read The Color Out of Space, and I've listened to some of The Call of the Cthulhu...

Date: 2008-06-17 01:51 pm (UTC)The best "Providence-centric" stories are "The Shunned House," "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," "The Haunter of the Dark," and "The Call of Cthulhu," all of which are available here. I reread them before my trip, but now that I've seen the places in person, I want to reread them again!
