Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] jinxed_wood, and happy early birthday to [livejournal.com profile] llembas! May you both have an excellent day and a fantastic new year.

A few quick notes:

* io9 has a new article on the AMC remake of The Prisoner: "The New Prisoner Will Be Retro, Gentle." AMC now has a production blog for The Prisoner here.

* The first issue of Transformative Works and Cultures was released on September 15, 2008. This open-access online multimedia fan studies journal publishes scholarly essays, personal essays, and book reviews. TWC is published under the umbrella of the nonprofit fan advocacy group Organization for Transformative Works, and although its audience will primarily be acafans (academic fans), its scope ranges widely with the aim of providing a forum for fannish voices, academic or not.

* My copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: The 10th Anniversary Edition arrived ahead of schedule. On an inside page is a terrific sketch of Snape (complete with manly stubble) by Rowling circa 1992-1993. She writes: “Although I have spent years denying that Snape is a vampire (one of the more outlandish and persistent fan theories), I must say he does look a little Count Dracula-ish in that cloak.” And indeed he does. Just as an aside: I’ve been reading the 1894 novel Trilby by George du Maurier (Daphne’s father), and it’s remarkable how similar the descriptions of Svengali (some lamentable 19th-century anti-Semitism aside) sound like Rowling’s descriptions of Snape. Now that I look at Rowling’s early illustration of Snape, the parallels are even clearer.

"Oh, very good," interrupted Snape, his lip curling. "Yes, it is easy to see that nearly six years of magical education have not been wasted on you, Potter. 'Ghosts are transparent.'"
- Severus Snape, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, J.K. Rowling

Augh! I can't wait to see the Snape picture!!! If you find a scanned copy online, please direct me to it!

That article about the Prisoner makes me feel ever so slightly better about the project... It seems like they are treating it in a classy and sophisticated manner. Have they talked about final casting recently? I'm finding mention of Jim Caviezel, who I know *nothing* about (except that he appears to be American - ick.)

I've seen Caviezel in several films (his performances that stand out for me are The Count of Monte Cristo and a short but extremely powerful role in I Am Sam). I find it interesting that so much was made of how McGoohan's Catholicism influenced the ideology that informed the series, and now his role has gone to one of the few highly visible and vocal Catholic actors of today, Caviezel.

We'll see.

Was wondering if you can recommend a good fantasy fiction critique group? Im prepping a short story that Id like to submit and I want some objective eyes to look at it.

Best,

Oh, how exciting!

The one that comes to mind is Critters, which is run by a former VP of the SFWA. I think the site has links to other critique resources, though, if this one turns out not to be to your liking. From what I've heard, this one has a good reputation. I hope the link is helpful!

eldritchhobbit - thank you so much! I am with a group of writers but they are largely immersed in Real World type stories. I will check that group out!

And thank you so much - I'm getting really excited about the October spookathon, and it makes me very happy that others look forward to it, too! :)

You and me both, my friend.

Here's an idea: why don't they go make something new instead of remaking everything? Did you hear MTV is going to remake The Rocky Horror Picture ShowThe Prisoner....

You're welcome! Virtual cupcakes are fat free, you know. So have seconds and thirds if you like! :D
