"Autumn is the mellower season"
Nov. 23rd, 2008 08:07 amApologies for being quiet of late. I've been wrestling with pneumonia, but now I'm on the mend in time to enjoy some truly beautiful fall weather. I have a few links to share...
Articles
* From Donald Liebenson at The Huffington Post: "Yes, Virginia, There is a Star Wars Holiday Special."
* From Charlie Jane Anders at io9: "Blame Time Travel For Kirk's Scarred Psyche."
* From Sci Fi Wire: "South Park's 7 Awesomest Sci-Fi Moments." (And yes, I caught this past week's episode with the Goth kids vs. the Vampire kids: priceless.)
* Don't forget about The Year of Readers 2009!
Interviews
* To the Best of Our Knowledge devotes an episode to "The Future of Science Fiction," in which author George R.R. Martin talks about science fiction, fantasy, storytelling and literature; author Ursula K. Le Guin comments on science fiction as a literature of ideas; scholar S.T. Joshi discusses H.P. Lovecraft; and scholar Istvan Csicsery-Ronay, Jr. discusses his new book The Seven Beauties of Science Fiction.
Trailers
(I'm sure everyone's seen these trailers by now, but I feel compelled to share them anyway, as I'm quite looking forward to these films.)
* Coraline
* Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
* Star Trek XI
Gratuitous YouTube Video - Just because it makes me happy: "Robots (The Humans Are Dead)" by Flight of the Conchords. Binary solo!
"Youth is like spring, an over praised season more remarkable for
biting winds than genial breezes. Autumn is the mellower season,
and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits."
- Samuel Butler

Date: 2008-11-23 02:56 pm (UTC)And thank you for the trailer links - having been sadly internet-deprived for a few weeks, I had most definitely not seen them! (And I'd been waiting on the new ST trailer for yonks. Although.... hmmm... while I generally don't hate time travel as a premise, it tends to be done really, really badly - stand up Braga, please - although with Nimoy's contribution... hmmm, I say. Hmmm.)

Date: 2008-11-24 06:28 pm (UTC)Thanks for the good wishes. It's no fun on top of asthma; at the moment, I've got two separate inhalers to keep me breathing. Blech. But I'm definitely getting much better.
I agree with you about the overuse and poor use of time travel, especially in ST. I'm not in love with the young, rebellious Kirk, either. But I can't help but be excited at some of the opportunities this presents, especially to have my beloved Bones and Scotty back, each of which will be played by actors I really like and who seem to be taking the roles very seriously. And there's the Nimoy factor, too. Hmmm, indeed!

Date: 2008-11-23 07:53 pm (UTC)ROTFLMAO - South Park is *awesome*! I particularly loved the LotR quest. :))) Then there's that quest-hamster... That D&D sort of quest they took through someone's body once and the hamster kept appearing with words of guidance. LOL!
Wow... I'm so completely out of it, I had no idea there was a new Star Trek movie out. Huh.
LOL! I've never heard of Flight of the Conchords - they're hilarious!
