allowed to make anything up
Oct. 12th, 2005 05:43 amHappy Wednesday!
I recommend the "Fantastic Friends" interview with Neil Gaiman and Susanna Clarke at Salon.com. As a fan of Gaiman's work, I'll admit I'm biased. I must confess that I still haven't read Clarke's book, though. The critical reaction has been so positive - any thoughts from those of you who have read it?
My favorite quote, from Gaiman:
They had some reviews in the back, and I said, "Oh look, here's a review of Kelly Link's new book. I wonder what they say." And what they said was that the book was really horrible because it was filled with things that were made up, zombies and things and a handbag with a world in it, and how could this possible relate to anybody's life? It was basically a review written by someone who could cope with neither similes nor metaphors.
Are either of us fantasy writers? I don't think so; we're both writers. But we make things up, and I like the privilege of being allowed to make anything up.
Now, in the Halloween spirit, a Lovecraft-related quiz:
A quiz:

You're not a monster at all, but an Investigator of
the supernatural. One of the brave few who
delve into the darkness for the sake of
humanity. Even if it means picking up a few
mental disorders on the way.
What H.P. Lovecraft Entity/Character Archetype Are You?

My Halloween quote for the day is "The Carol of the Old Ones," a song from A Very Scary Solstice, one of the wonderful albums by The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. You can listen to and download the song here.
Teaser:
They will return: mankind will learn
New kinds of fear when they are here.
They will reclaim all in their name;
Hopes turn to black when they come back.
(to the tune of "The Carol of the Bells")
Look to the sky, way up on high
There in the night stars are now right.
Eons have passed: now then at last
Prison walls break, Old Ones awake!
They will return: mankind will learn
New kinds of fear when they are here.
They will reclaim all in their name;
Hopes turn to black when they come back.
Ignorant fools, mankind now rules
Where they ruled then: it's theirs again
Stars brightly burning, boiling and churning
Bode a returning season of doom
Scary scary scary scary solstice
Very very very scary solstice
Up from the sea, from underground
Down from the sky, they're all around
They will return: mankind will learn
New kinds of fear when they are here
Look to the sky, way up on high
There in the night stars are now right.
Eons have passed: now then at last
Prison walls break, Old Ones awake!
Madness will reign, terror and pain
Woes without end where they extend.
Ignorant fools, mankind now rules
Where they ruled then: it's theirs again
Stars brightly burning, boiling and churning
Bode a returning season of doom
Scary scary scary scary solstice

They will return.
