Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] fory_san. May you have a wonderful day today and many more to come!

On this day in 1849, Edgar Allan Poe died at the age of forty under mysterious circumstances. This Sunday, Poe is finally getting a proper funeral.

For more information about Poe's death, read "Mysterious for Evermore" by Matthew Pearl, an article on Poe's death from The Telegraph. Pearl is the author of a fascinating recent novel about the subject, The Poe Shadow.

Earlier this year, on the occasion of Poe's 200th birthday, I took over the StarShipSofa Audio Science Fiction Magazine to host an hour-long tribute to this pioneer of the short story, luminary of Gothic horror, father of detective fiction, and giant of science fiction. You can listen to the podcast here at the StarShipSofa website, or download it here, or access it via iTunes. If you listen, I hope you enjoy my celebration of Poe's life, works, and legacy!

Spooky Text of the Day: Today's text is the poem "Spirits of the Dead" by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849).

Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone;
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy.

Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness–for then
The spirits of the dead, who stood
In life before thee, are again
In death around thee, and their will
Shall overshadow thee; be still.

The night, though clear, shall frown,
And the stars shall not look down
From their high thrones in the Heaven
With light like hope to mortals given,
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.

Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,
Now are visions ne'er to vanish;
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more, like dew-drop from the grass.

The breeze, the breath of God, is still,
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy, shadowy, yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token.
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries!

Christopher Walken could make The Joy of Cooking scary. Also how adorable is it that John Astin is going to MC the funeral? Eeeeeeee, that is totally the cutest thing ever, and he calls him Eddie. Hahahahaha.

Also, I got your creepy ass cat card in the mail! Omg thank you! Good thing there was confetti and other stuff, or I would have, you know, cried. Because it was creepy. WELL DONE YOU. XD

So true! :)

I absolutely love the fact John Astin will be the MC. That made my day.

Yay, I'm so glad you liked the card-n-stuff (and found it creepy, too)! October is the best.

Not sure if they could be found on YouTube (at least they weren't there last time I checked), but how about The Raven as read on The Simpsons or on Rocky and Bullwinkle? For that matter, how about the episode of Peabody's Improbable History where they meet Poe?

All of these are great examples of Poe adaptations! The Raven on The Simpsons has become the stuff of legend, I think.

Gosh, I have loved Poe's writings for so many years. Your comments just made me decide to read 30 minutes of Poe each day this month. Will be a delightful "project." Thanks!

I once had a coworker tell me I was strange when she saw me reading an EAP collection.

I love Vincent Price's reading of the Raven (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FID1CiB4bcU). I'm also listening to The Essential Edgar Allan Poe on audiobook (Naxos Audio 2008). Great narration.

What a wonderful reading by Vincent Price! Thank you for the link. There's a special quality in listening to Poe's work, above and beyond just reading it.
