eldritchhobbit: (Halloween)
[personal profile] eldritchhobbit

Every year, my parents send their granddog, the magnificent Virginia, a Halloween costume for her to wear. The latest arrived yesterday. As you can see to the right, this year she's transformed from a Boston Terrier into a Boston Bumble Bee.

As always, you can see more pictures of Virginia here. A picture of Virginia is featured in Stuff on My Mutt: The Book, too!

And in Edgar Allan Poe-related news...
* You may recall that I previously posted that Edgar Allan Poe would finally get a proper funeral this year. It happened! (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] groovekittie for the link.)
* Watch a video here of Poe's funeral procession and the historical and contemporary figures who attended the service.
* The Guardian points out that Poe pulled a balloon hoax before balloon hoaxes were cool. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gbsteve.)

Spooky Text of the Day: Today we have them poem "Hallowe'en" (1913) by Virna Sheard.

Hark! Hark to the wind! 'Tis the night, they say,
When all souls come back from the far away--
The dead, forgotten this many a day!

And the dead remembered--ay! long and well--
And the little children whose spirits dwell
In God's green garden of asphodel.

Have you reached the country of all content,
0 souls we know, since the day you went
From this time-worn world, where your years were spent?

Would you come back to the sun and the rain,
The sweetness, the strife, the thing we call pain,
And then unravel life's tangle again?

I lean to the dark--Hush!--was it a sigh?
Or the painted vine-leaves that rustled by?
Or only a night-bird's echoing cry?

Awww, what a lovely Boston Bumble Bee.

I always enjoy seeing Virginia both dressed up and undressed up.

Such lovely pictures.

I love the pictures of Virginia! And she makes an adorable bumble bee. I wish my dogs would sit still for something like that.

Aw, thank you! It took a number of peanut butter treats to bribe her into cooperation, but in the end she was wonderfully patient with us. ;)

I love Virginia and her Christmas card always gets pride of place every year on the mantle! I've printed some of her out and have put her up at work to cheer up the office a bit. I'll email you a picture of it tonight when I get home! <3 *hugs*

Thanks! :)

You're most welcome. I was intrigued to see which anachronistic figures attended the service: H.P. Lovecraft and Alfred Hitchcock, for example.

And so patient in all her costumes.

Thank you!

She is very patient with us, but her patience comes with a price - she was well compensated with peanut butter treats. Ha! And we also promised it would be a whole year before we put her through that again. ;)

A Virginia post! Yay! It always cracks me up when dogs are totally un-phased by clothing.

Yay! :) Most of her expressions say, "The treats had better be good. That's all I'm sayin'." She knows the costume's just for the photo op, but she quite likes her hoodie that she wears on morning walks in the winter. She struts when we put it on her. ;)

Aw, thank you! :)

Not only did her grandparents send the costume, but they also sent the gourmet peanut butter treats with which we bribed her to wear the costume. Clearly, they know how this process works. LOL!

...Baaahahahahahahahaaa!! That's the cutest! Quite a different vibe from the previous years' costumes.

And she's featured in Stuff on My Mutt?! Wow. I'm impressed! I mean...of course she is.

Thanks! It really is a different kind of costume, isn't it? My parents went wild this year. Ha!

This picture was posted on the Stuff on My Mutt blog, but I didn't know it made the book until I was leafing through it at Barnes & Noble. It was a nice surprise!

ROFLOL - that's hysterical! (A vote in his favor, if he has the good taste to be owned by a Boston, I must say.) There definitely should be a "I'll pass on you but I'll definitely take your pet" option. ;)

Thank you so much! She does love to model - maybe that's because she knows after every successful photo op, she is paid for her time with a treat. ;)

I'm so glad you liked the poem, too!

OK, FREAKY TWIN GIRL STOP IT!!! Not 10 MINUTES AGO I was telling Aunt D about the adorable doggy bee costume I just saw at Walmart, and *that* led to the discussion about how you keep torturing that poor dog every Halloween... STOP READING MY MIND!!!

:::DIES:::

From: [identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com
ROFLOL! We're definitely sharing the same wavelength. Separated twins. Well, either that, or I'm just stalking you with a mind-reading device. *wink*

You know, it's really her grandparents who torture her on Halloween. (They do send gourmet peanut butter treats as enticement/apology for taking the photos in her costume, so she is bribed/compensated.) We're the ones who torture her at Christmas. But then the year ends with the solemn promise that it's all over until the holidays come back around... ;)

LOL!
