Spooky Text of the Day: Today's Halloween-friendly reading is "The Cold Embrace" by Mary E. Braddon (1837-1915).
Excerpt:
"Can death part us? I would return to you from the grave, Gertrude. My soul would come back to be near my love. And you – if you died before me – the cold earth would not hold you from me; if you loved me, you would return, and again these fair arms would be clasped round my neck as they are now."
But she told him, with a holier light in her deep-blue eyes than had ever shone in his – she told him that the dead who die at peace with God are happy in heaven, and cannot return to the troubled earth; and that it is only the suicide – the lost wretch on whom sorrowful angels shut the door of Paradise – whole unholy spirit haunts the footsteps of the living.

Date: 2009-10-27 03:14 am (UTC)Back in the early 1970s the Bunny Man was reputed to live in the woods near my house, roughly bounded by University Blvd, Arcola Avenue, and Channing Dr in Silver Spring MD. The woods also connected with Sligo Creek Park and (almost) with Wheaton Regional Park, where the Bunny Man would probably need to be careful in case he ever ran into Greenfoot, reputed to be an NIH cafeteria worker who cut his foot with a cleaver and developed gangrene. Supposedly human blood would stave off further deterioration.
