Back from RavenCon 2010
Apr. 13th, 2010 09:53 amI am back from a most excellent time at RavenCon. I saw old friends and made new ones, attended fascinating panels, and enjoyed some terrifically energizing discussions.
My solo presentation was remarkably well attended and received, for which I'm very grateful. I also was thrilled at the turnout for my autograph session. (I sold out of all of my books!)
One of the highlights of the con for me was the "Podcasting: The Future of SF Magazines?" panel, which was moderated by the terrific author/editor Mike Allen (a.k.a.
time_shark), and included Michael D. Pederson, Devo Spice, and myself (as well as podcasting heavy-hitters Helen E.H. Madden and Mur Lafferty in the audience). It was a packed room and a great discussion (with an emphasis on what StarShipSofa's Hugo nomination meant for podcasting as a whole, as well as where the future of podcasting will take us).
Another highlight was the "J.K. Rowling vs. Stephenie Meyer" panel, which I moderated, and which included con Author Guest of Honor Rachel Caine, Cheralyn Lambeth, and Kirsten Vaughan from the Blibbering Humdingers. Although this was scheduled for the last panel slot of the con, we had very strong attendance, and the discussion was quite fruitful, as we discussed the authors' accomplishment, purposes, audiences, possible legacies, and the mainstream media's handling of each. I was pleased that the audience and panelists were very inclusive and respectful, so that readers of each author felt welcome to join the discussion and offer their questions and insights. We ended with related book recommendations, and Suzanne Collins's Hunger Games trilogy came up more than once.
Oh yes, how could I forget? I also was accosted by a One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater.

It was great to see
sittingduck1313 again and to congratulate
vg_ford on her wonderfully successful book launch. I came back with notes, reading recommendations, and lots of new ideas: the sign of an excellent con, to be sure. I hope all is well with you, my friends.

Date: 2010-04-13 02:29 pm (UTC)The Purple People Eater is adorable - I think I used to have a beanbag that looked a bit like that.

Date: 2010-04-22 03:32 pm (UTC)LOL - it did rather look like a beanbag with legs, now that I think of it. Or a mutant relative of Barney. ;)

Date: 2010-04-22 03:34 pm (UTC)The new hotel for the con is fantastic. Great space, plenty of room to spread out, nice places for informal conversations. And they've got it for next year, too!

Date: 2010-04-15 08:30 am (UTC)Does the One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater only eat purple-wearing people? I don't know how this works. I thought it didn't eat you because its sensor realized you were not a person, but in fact a hobbit...an eldritch one.
