The new Doctor has got me watching seriously again for the first time for years.

Although Pertwee was my first Doctor (Terror of the Autons when I was 5 and terrified by those daffodils), Baker is my favourite. I thought Ecclestone did a great job with the relaunch but I prefer Smith to Tennant.

Baker was my first, but I've managed to go back and pick up some Pertwee (and I need to watch more). I also liked McCoy quite a bit. I'm a big fan of Eccleston's Doctor, but I'm really enjoying Smith, too.

This is the first article that I posted to my LJ and sent to my colleagues at work (for me LJ world and academic world are intentionally discreetly discrete)!

Also, the second part of your post has given me the courage to admit that I am actually enjoying the new Doctor Who more than numbers 9 and 10!

Three cheers for crossover articles! Our worlds (academia and SF) are colliding. :)

I'm really loving Smith, too. I adored Eccleston's Doctor, but Smith is very compelling.

Oh, so I've found someone else who prefers Eccleston to Tennant?!?!

Yes indeed!

I did like Tennant, but I'd choose Eccleston's portrayal any day of the week.

I'm a little sad that I can't vote for Sylvester McCoy more than once, actually.

Thanks for the link to the academic working class study. I was one of the respondents.

And no, it wasn't me who cited X-Files :) I don't even think Imentioned MFU.

I was wondering what happened to the study. Now, I think I'll email her for a copy of the results.

You're most welcome! It sounds like a fascinating study, and I was really surprised to read that more hasn't been done about this. (My husband fits in the category, as well.) It must've been very interesting to participate in as a respondent.

I'd be fascinated to know more of the results.

I'm a solid Three fangirl but I really enjoy Doctors 1, 2 & 7 as well, they're forever reshuffling which order they're in for faves.

I dropped in a vote for Tom Baker's Four as well, because he was so entertaining. :-) Smith is doing a fine job, but he hasn't earned a ticky-box from me yet, I'm waiting to see what sort of Doctor he is over more episodes.

Excellent choices, all! Tom Baker was my first Doctor, but I have special soft spots for 3 and 7, as well. I think 9 may be my all-time favorite interpretation of the Doctor, all things considered, but I agree with you - Smith is doing very, very well as 11. I'm really enjoying watching him. (And I love the elbow patches on the tweed blazer! LOL!)

I suppose I should have ticked Tennant as well... but I didn't because the thing is, it wasn't 10 so much as Tennant himself I was a fan of. It was such fun to have a FANBOY in the part! If you strip that away though, 10 doesn't make the favorite list for me.

Definitely agree. It was fun watching "David Tennant have a blast being The Doctor" more than it was fun simply watching The Doctor.

Exactly - you both put your finger on it for me re: Tennant. I think Eccleston gave my single favorite interpretation of the Doctor, although I've very much enjoyed especially the Pertwee and McCoy I've seen. (Tom Baker was my first Doctor.) I'm loving Smith - it's amazing, considering his age, how convincingly he gets across the fussy old vibe of a character well over 900 years old.

John Pertwee and Chris Eccleston.

I think David Tennant is in a class by himself. Not necessarily better, but more tremendous. Somehow, it doesn't feel fair to pick him. He's very much his own Doctor.

And I agree about liking the new series. Matt Smith is delightful, in my opinion, and will probably join Three and Nine to make a proper trio when all is said and done. He fits well with those two.

Fun poll! And great article as well! Thank you for sharing, dear. :)

I agree with everything you said about the Doctors. And I love your point about 3, 9, and 11 forming a proper trio - you're so right!

Now if I could just find a way to work Qui-Gon in there somewhere... ;) Because, all these years later, it's still all about Qui-Gon. Ha!

I'm so glad the article was of interest, too. I thought it was fascinating. *hugs*

Ten is and always will be my favourite. Smith is growing on me with every episode though.

I'm very much a New Who fan though since I wasn't exposed to Old Who at all, which is unfortunate. I wish I could have seen them. *sigh*

Smith is growing on me, too!

Tom Baker was my first Doctor, but my exposure to Old Who was spotty, so I know about some of them and I'm still ignorant of the others. Fortunately for us, they seem to be increasingly available for DVD rental. I need to catch up! Thus far, my favorite "retro" Doctors are Three (Pertwee) and Seven (McCoy).

I became a full-fledged fan with Eccleston, though, and he's still my favorite. :)

While I do enjoy William Hartnell (recently got the first ever episodes on DVD) and Patrick Troughton was always entertaining... it was more Patrick's animosity to Jon Pertwee during the multi-Doctor specials that I saw and I felt Pertwee came out ahead. Plus he had Venusian Akido :P Tom Baker is likely the one I have seen the most of when he was broadcast on the local public television. Caught very little unfortunately of the others (though I liked Peter Davison's look best). I haven't seen Matt Smith yet so the jury is absent for him. Chris and David have been great to watch!!!

Side interesting notes: Jenny is actually the daughter of a Doctor... though Peter Davison rather than David Tennant :P And Professor Hobbs (Midnight) as well as some other characters from the Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee years is the son of Patrick Troughton.

I have got to get those early episodes on DVD! My knowledge of/experience with Hartnell and Troughton is limited. Tom Baker was my first Doctor (like you, I watched on PSB), but I've gone back and picked up some Pertwee, and I quite like him. Of the later "old" Whos, I really liked McCoy.

Plus he had Venusian Akido :P

LOL! Seriously!

Eccleston, I think, is my absolute favorite thus far. Tennant was great to watch, and Smith is just as good (in a very different way), if not better (or, at least, different in a way I enjoy even more). I hope you like him, too!

I'd heard that about Jenny (I can see the resemblance), but I had no idea about Hobbs/Midnight. How fascinating! It's a small Who world, isn't it?

Happy Who-ing!

I've only seen bits and pieces of Classic Who so I don't really any of them are my favorites yet. I loved Christopher Eccleston and enjoyed a fair amount of David Tennant. Matt Smith's series is promising to be very enjoyable indeed!

All through that scene I kept thinking, 'He's holding a biscuit. Any minute he's going to eat it.' And then he did! Hehe.

I need to work on my Classic Who watching. Netflix seems to have quite a few episodes on its instant watch program. Very handy. ;)

9 was my first Doctor, and I LOVED him-I was heartbroken when I found out he was going to regenerate... and so I hated David Tennant for the longest time, but I kept watching anyway, because I love the show... Then I started to adore his acting, and I can honestly say I bawled like a baby during The End of Time. So because he was the only Doctor who made me cry, I voted 10. ^_~
But since I know I start out hating the new Doctor no matter who it is, I'm going to give 11 a chance... even though I think he was a very odd choice. I love Amy Pond, though! She seems like she could develope into really strong character.

Eccleston wasn't my first (that was Tom Baker), but he was (and is) my favorite. I know exactly how you felt. But then I really enjoyed Tennant. And Smith is fascinating to watched - I'm amazed at how such a young man can capture the fussy, eccentric "vibe" of a 900-plus-year-old so well. And he's definitely not Tennant and not trying to be in any way, which really works. And I agree with you about Amy Pond. My favorite companion thus far has been Donna Noble, and I was hoping the next would be equally as strong and no-nonsense. :)

I think Pertwee will always be my favorite. The man had style :) Colin Baker was also a fav, especially after the disaster of Peter Davidson's Dr. Wimpy. Baker had a nice chaotic edge to his performance. Tennant ranks very high, but it may be just a bit too soon after his leaving to fairly rank him.

Alas, I'm not warming up to the new Doctor at all. I have high hopes for Moffet as producer, as he's been a fantastic writer, not just in Who but also in Coupling (and didn't he do the BBC Jekyll series?). However, I fear he's seriously undermined his tenure with a very weak performer as the Doctor.

On a related note, anyone see Great Performances last night with Hamlet starring Tennant and Patrick Stewart as Claudus/Ghost of father? I was thinking how good a Hamlet would be cast with many performers from the series. Tennant as Hamlet again, Rose as Ophelia, Claire Bloom (the woman Time Lord seen recently) as Hamlet's mother (or perhaps Sarah Jane). Tom Baker as Claudus, Sylvester McCoy as Polonius, Eccleston (in his Elizabeth guise) as Fortinbras, and Capt Jack as Horatio.

I did see Hamlet! That was a very strong production in every possible way. Tennant was riveting to watch. I love your idea for a Who-centric Hamlet recasting!

Tom Baker was my first Doctor, but I've quite liked all I've seen of Pertwee and McCoy, as well. Eccleston blew me away; his is at this point my favorite interpretation of the character. So far I like Matt Smith's understated, fussy, old-man-in-young-body approach, as it contrasts with Tennant's frenetic energy well, I think - but, of course, the day's still young.

You're so right: Pertwee had serious style. (And hair. And I mean that in a good way.)

I mainly watched Dr. Who when I was in elementary school, so I just picked the ones that stand out, visually, in my mind (Tom Baker and John Pertwee). ;)

Zoe Keating was talking about Dr. Who on Twitter not too long ago. She basically said Tom Baker is her dream man and that her significant other is a lot like him; then this one girl said that her dream man was Tilda Swinton and that she was okay with that, which made me laugh. THEN they were talking about how Tilda Swinton should be the next Time Lord. I just wanted to post all this to say that I agree.

But the new guy looks fun.

That's so awesome!

I'm really liking Smith's portrayal so far.

I would love to see Tilda Swinton as the next Doctor. She's a force of nature. The Daleks wouldn't stand a chance!
