I'm baaack!
First of all, thanks to everyone who took part in my poll about your favorite Arthurian films. As of this posting, the results are as follows:
1st Place - Monty Python and the Holy Grail
2nd Place - Excalibur
3rd Place - The Sword in the Stone
4th Place - Camelot
Second, you may recall that I recently posted a short list of my favorite young adult dystopian novels. One of the series I most strongly recommended was the brilliant Tomorrow Series by John Marsden. Now the first book in that series, Tomorrow, When the War Began, is being turned into a film. I'm always skeptical about movie adaptations of novels, but sometimes I'm happily surprised, so we'll see. If nothing else, I hope it will encourage more people to read the books. Here is the trailer:
Speaking of movies, one of my very favorite classic Western television series, The Big Valley, is being reimagined as a feature film for 2011 release. I've been following the rumors, and I see that the latest casting news puts Jessica Lange (not, as previously suggested, Susan Sarandon) in the lead role of matriarch Victoria Barkley (originally portrayed by Barbara Stanwyck) and Stephen Moyer (not, as previously reported, Ryan Phillippe) as Jarrod Barkley (originally portrayed by Richard Long). Hmmm. I'm still thinking through what these choices mean. I'm not running away screaming, which probably is a good sign - especially since I think the casting for these two characters in particular might make or break the film. Lee Majors, who starred in the original series as Heath, will now appear (presumably in flashbacks) as the deceased father of the Barkley clan, Tom Barkley.
We had no foundations, and we had no secure walls around our lives anymore. We were living in a strange long nightmare, where we had to make our own rules, invent new values, stumble around blindly, hoping we weren't making too many mistakes. We clung to what we knew and what we thought was right, but all the time those things too were being stripped from us. I didn't know if we'd be left with nothing, or if we'd be left with a new set of rules and attitudes and behaviours, so that we wouldn't recognise ourselves anymore. We could end up as new, distorted, deformed creatures, with only a few physical resemblances to the to the people we once were.

Date: 2010-06-20 05:39 pm (UTC)I don't know much about Jason Alan Smith, who supposedly is going to be Nick. I don't think I've ever seen anything he's done. One thing's for sure: he has some big boots (and black leather gloves) to fill! *g*

Date: 2010-06-20 12:40 am (UTC)(rant)Does EVERYTHING need to be redone, made into a sequel or reimagined? Actually, come to think of it, "reimagined" is somewhat of an oxymoron.(/rant)

Date: 2010-06-20 05:49 pm (UTC)I agree wholeheartedly about the "reboots" everywhere. What ever happened to original ideas, for heaven's sake? I'm trying not to panic about this one, because the daughter of the original show's creator is at the helm, and I'm hoping that means she at least respects the original material. (The casting of Lee Majors may be a hint that this is so.) Also, this may provide the added incentive for the powers that be to release the final seasons of the series on DVD (finally!). Still, I'd much rather see original new films than rehashes of old ones - especially when I hold the oldies near and dear to my heart.

Re remakes, I read an article in the current Ent Weekly that suggested Jaden Smith for a remake of RUDY. Aggggrrrggggggggh. He is only 11 years old so hopefully anyone who reads that will quickly forget the idea. But it never occurred to me until I read that, that they might remake that film. "the horror, the horror"

Date: 2010-07-09 09:24 pm (UTC)I agree.
Stephen Moyer's pretty high profile for Jarrod; I hope this means he'll have a key role.
I know what you mean about the actors having to prove themselves. I am heartened, though, that I've seen Lange give very wide-ranging performances (both strong and vulnerable) and I've seen her go grey to play a role.
The script will be sooooo important! It's hard to wait!
