28 Days Until Halloween

This afternoon my husband and I are attending a concert at Lenoir-Rhyne University by Heinavanker (The Haywain), a vocal music ensemble from Tallinn, Estonia named after the famous altarpiece by Hieronymus Bosch. I think their performance will help set the Gothic mood for my favorite month very nicely. Yes, indeed.

Star Trek and zombies: now there's a marriage made in Halloween heaven. ("He's undead, Jim!") Quirk Books recently published Night of the Living Trekkies by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall, a novel that explores this very subject. What would happen if the zombie apocalypse began at your local science fiction convention?

While I have nothing against zombies, I generally find stories devoted to zombie apocalypse to be full of meh. So I was a bit surprised to find that I enjoyed World War Z.

I'm more leery about Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. From what I'm given to understand, it lifts the text of the original novel and inserts the zombie stuff more or less at random. IMO if you're going to take classic literature and insert fantasical elements, you should go whole hog. A good example of what I'm talking about is STR.A.IN., which is evidence that someone has thought, "A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett is a nice enough story, but it would have been even better if it had featured giant robots in space blowing *#%* up."
