Happy November, everyone! And happy early birthday wishes to [livejournal.com profile] madkestrel and [livejournal.com profile] crackferret. May both of you enjoy many happy returns of the day.

For the record, my love for the BBC's Sherlock is devouring my brain. I had to share.

In publication news, I'm happy to report that my proposed article "From Amerind to Dorvan: The Future History of Native America in Star Trek" has been accepted for the upcoming History and Star Trek collection to be published by Wiley & Sons in 2012. I've been wanting to write a piece on this topic for a long time (tracing the subject of Native America through all of the incarnations of Trek), and I'm really pleased to have the opportunity now to do it.

Last, I wanted to let everyone in the United States with access to PBS know that, beginning on November 2, the Independent Lens series will be featuring the documentary Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Indian. I recommend it. Once more with feeling, here's the trailer:

"How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun.

At other times, they wildly fly
Until they nearly reach the sky.
Twisting, turning through the air
Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Exhausted, drop to earth below
To wait, like children, for the snow."
- Elsie N. Brady, "Leaves"

Congratulations! :)

I've been loving Sherlock too, and telling everyone to watch it. I'm sad that there are only three episodes (so far).

Thank you!

It's been years since a series impressed me so much. I agree with you about wishing there were more episodes. Thank heavens Martin Freeman's casting as Bilbo Baggins (inspired, that is) won't interfere with the filming of the next episodes. As it is, I'm not quite sure I can wait -- I might explode if they had to delay any longer! LOL.

I know! I was worried about that, too. I'm glad we'll get more Holmes before we get Bilbo. :)

Yes, it's a win-win all the way around, I think.

Sherlock is brilliant :) The second episode less so, perhaps, but I've forgotten that one in the sheer squee of episodes 1 & 3.

Though it probably won't be covered in Reel Indian, a though occurred to me recently. Namely, how often are American Indian actors cast as characters who aren't explicitly American Indians. The only one which comes to mind is Graham Greene on The Red Green Show. In fact there's one episode where he alludes to his role in Dances With Wolves.

Good one! The only other role I can think of off the top of my head is also Wes Studi, this time in the short-lived (but quite compelling) series Kings.

Oh, I can hardly wait for the "From Amerind to Dorvan" piece. Be sure and post when it publishes, will you? Some day, in the hazy future, I WILL write False Gods. Honest. I will. Seriously.

I am totally in love with Dr. Watson - just the right amount of English blokishness, befuddlement, fragility, exasperation and honour. I introduced the teen of the house to it and he can't wait until the next episodes come out. Here's a puzzlethough, I asked him with whom did he identify, Holmes or Watson, fully expecting him to say Watson and he is very much like him in character in my opinion, and it's Holmes all the way for him. Should I be worried. When I asked him why, he just grinned and said, "Misunderstood genius, Mum!"

I agree 100% about Watson. I've always loved he character, but Martin Freeman really gets him. It's like he took canon and just ran with it and made it his own. Your description is perfect.

Ha! I loved your son's take on the show. What a hoot! :D
