Happy 202nd Birthday, Edgar Allan Poe!

For the second year in a row, the Poe Toaster has failed to appear. I for one will be raising a glass in Poe's honor this evening.

From QMx, here's a new recording of "The Raven," read by John De Lancie.

Just a reminder: two years ago, for Poe's 200th birthday, I took over StarShipSofa: The Audio Science Fiction Magazine to host an hour-long tribute to this pioneer of the short story, luminary of Gothic horror, father of detective fiction, and giant of science fiction. You can stream the podcast live at the StarShipSofa website, or download it here. If you listen, I hope you enjoy!

"There are moments when, even to the sober eye of Reason, the world of our sad Humanity may assume the semblance of a Hell -- but the imagination of man is no Carathis, to explore with impunity its every cavern. Alas! the grim legion of sepulchral terrors cannot be regarded as altogether fanciful -- but, like the Demons in whose company Afrasiab made his voyage down the Oxus, they must sleep, or they will devour us -- they must be suffered to slumber, or we perish."
- Edgar Allan Poe, "The Premature Burial"

We should probably suck it up and acknowledge that the Poe Toaster is likely dead now (especially considing how long it went on) and failed to designate a successor.

It may be significant that the last appearance fell on the 200th birthday, too. Maybe that was seen as the fitting time to retire.

Have you seen this, and do you know what it represents?

Oh, wow! I'm not sure I've ever read that before. Am I right in thinking it's one of those works that follows the value of pi? Very, very cool!

Yes, happy 202 to Poe . .. but I'm not sure about the advice provided in that quote. If writers all followed it, much of the most interesting literature would not exist today!

Excellent point about the quote. I thought that was rather ironic! I guess that's one of those "Do as he does, not as he says" sorts of things. ;)

Very bummed that a simple, elegant tribute and tradition may be ended now. Whoever did it for the last 60 years, thank-you.
