Today is the first day of the new semester! My seminar(s) are mere hours away... Where did summer go again, exactly?

* At Goodreads.com, I've created a Listopia list for the best Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper Novels. It's a work in progress. Please take part and add books or vote if you're interested! Thanks so much. I'll have a new update soon to post here about my ongoing Sherlockian pastiche reading.

* I love Cabin Pressure. So much. This latest series was, yes, brilliant.

(And speaking of great series, the second series of Garrow's Law was fantastic, as expected.)

* This week also spells the return of Doctor Who.

I don't really watch Dr Who, but I saw Arthur Darville as Mephistophiles in Dr Faustus at The Globe and he was most cool. He shoots fireworks out of his fingers!

Yes, where did the summer go... My kids went back to school today, my university starts today, though fortunately I don't teach until tomorrow.

Usually the BBC website has each episode (there are now three seasons plus a Christmas episode) up for listening for a week. After that, you can buy them through iTunes or Audible.com. (The third season just ended, so it will probably be a few weeks before it's available for purchase.)

It's really brilliant. And one of the most recent episodes (the one I quoted at the bottom of this post, the riff on the classic Holmesian quote from "The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet") has an extended gag about Benedict Cumberbatch's Martin Crieff as a sleuth (with many Sherlock in-jokes). So much fun, and unexpectedly poignant, too.
