Happy Tuesday!
Sep. 27th, 2011 08:41 amHappy Tuesday!
* The first part of a two-part interview with me is now up here at Darkcargo, in which I talk about science fiction, classic novel/monster mashups, "further adventures of," and other literary subjects. The second half (about genre, Sherlock Holmes, and writing, among other things) will be up on Friday. Darkcargo is a terrific multi-authored blog about reading, book anticipation, con-going, and general genre-related fun, and I highly recommend checking out its other features!
* There's additional information online about this upcoming Saturday's PotterWatch 2011 Scholarly Conference on Harry Potter at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. My keynote talk will be "On Fairy-Stories, Readers, and the Potterverse." I hope to see some of you there!
* Happy belated birthday wishes to
delenn1960,
lbilover,
shagungu, and
xanath, and happy birthday to
curtana! May all of you enjoy a wonderful year to come!
* In personal news, three cheers for my baby sister, Margret!
-- Her first refereed scholarly article has been published! So next time you're reading the International Journal of Climatology (who doesn't?), be sure to look for her work: "Spatial Coherence of Rainfall Variations Using the Oklahoma Mesonet." Woohoo!
-- She has a brand new, shiny job (besides perpetual tornado chaser extraordinaire) with the Oklahoma Climatological Survey. Yay!
-- She and my brother-in-law are expecting their first child. Huzzah! The whole family is excited about welcoming baby Kaitlyn in the spring.
And here's Virginia, doing her impersonation of my reaction to the new Star Wars blu-ray release:

"It's not that I expect Lucas to stop screwing with Star Wars. I imagine that he'll do so until he dies, and even then, he'll probably build a special robot that lives on after him with the sole purpose of finding things it doesn't like about Star Wars and 'fixing' them."

Thanks for reporting what you're listening to! I love to know what music other people like.

Date: 2011-09-27 02:21 pm (UTC)Congrats to the Sis.
I really think there is something really dangerous in the water in California... I'm so glad I escaped. Really super talented people all seem to go completely bat-s*** crazy out there. We can dibble around all day about how much we hate Lucas for the *changes* he feels he has the right to make, but when he crossed over into *eradicating* the old materials, he seriously gave up his rights in this matter. And the audacity to think that this is HIS WORK. I'm not talking about the fans, I'm talking about the thousands of artists and professionals that created that movie. It's NOT his baby anymore.

Excellent point! The thought of all of Frank Oz's work with Yoda, for example, being gone with one wave of the CGI wand... that's such an injustice! AUGH!

Date: 2011-09-27 05:14 pm (UTC)Virginia's expression matches mine. I would like to be able to encase the original theatrical releases of Star Wars in a format where the fans could still enjoy them--and George Lucas would spontaneously combust if he tried to change them.

Yes! I'd buy that version. ;)

Date: 2011-09-29 12:14 pm (UTC)Ooooh, I want to soooo badly! I've got to figure out my travel schedule for next year. There's a good chance I may have to make another international trip in the fall, which may make this impossible, but for now I'm holding out hope. *fingers crossed* I need to get all of my ducks in a row, as they say!

Date: 2011-09-30 03:20 pm (UTC)George, these are not the Blu Rays you are looking for
Date: 2011-09-29 04:19 am (UTC)As for the Star Wars Blu Rays....the changes weren't as cringe worthy as I feared they might be. I mean nothing along the lines of Greedo shooting first or inserting Hayden into the force ghost scene in Jedi, but I do wish Lucas Arts was required to include the original unedited movies free with all releases for perpetuity. I imagine they'll probably release another edition on Blu Ray to get us hapless geeks to buy it yet again with the theatrical releases like they did with the DVDs.

Yes indeed! I agree. I fear the originals will get lost somehow in all this tinkering - especially since Lucas clearly wishes they would disappear.

And regarding Potterwatch: I hope to see some of you there!
Me me me! *jumping up and down* I'll be there! I'm flying out tomorrow and of course I'm not packed yet. I'll be the bespectacled nerd with the Harry Potter tote bag. Um. Wait. That won't help! I'm sure we'll find each other. :-D

Date: 2011-09-30 11:37 am (UTC)I'm so excited about meeting you in person. LOL, I'll be one of the other bespectacled nerds with the Harry Potter tote bag! ;) To be a bit more precise, I'm quite short, I have long brown hair and glasses, and if all goes as planned, I'll be wearing a short-ish black dress/cardigan and tall black boots. And for a healthy amount of the conference, I'll probably have my hand wrapped around a Starbucks cup. I'll go check out the schedule and see when your panel will be held. It will be wonderful to see you!
