* Belated birthday wishes to [livejournal.com profile] belleferret and [livejournal.com profile] valancourtbooks, and happy early birthday wishes to [livejournal.com profile] potboy, [livejournal.com profile] alex_beecroft, [livejournal.com profile] nurdbunny, [livejournal.com profile] lisa_marli, [livejournal.com profile] graashoppa, [livejournal.com profile] toddlyles, [livejournal.com profile] pktheater, and [livejournal.com profile] lizzieausten. May all of you enjoy many happy returns of the day!

* My latest unabridged narration for StarShipSofa, which is the second half of Kate Wilhelm's novella The Bird Cage, is now available to stream or download on the newest episode of the podcast. (The first half of the novella is here.) If you listen, I hope you enjoy. (A full list of links to my unabridged dramatic readings is here.)

* Remember that 15-week "Taking Harry Seriously: The Artistry and Meanings of the Harry Potter Saga" graduate class I taught last semester? The Mythgard Institute now has course packs available, including the syllabus and video downloads of all 15 90-minute lectures and all 15 45-minute closing sessions. Mythgard also has the course pack for Dr. Corey Olsen's "The Making of Myth" available, too. Here's more information.

And now, for what's first and last on my mind, and everything in between at the moment,

Virginia had her surgery yesterday, and she seems to be doing very well. Early cancer cells were discovered in one of five later biopsies, but we're cautiously optimistic that this operation will have excised everything that could have become problematic. (When we get the full lab reports next week, we'll find out if any further treatment is indicated.) Certainly the immediate polyp problem, at least, will be solved. Assuming all goes as planned, she'll be headed home for her recovery very shortly. We're so grateful for your good thoughts. Thanks again, my friends!

May you have a fantastic weekend!

Mhmm Quite

I hope Virginia continues to recover well, and that all the cancer cells were removed. Congratulations on the Mythgard Institute's having picked up your lectures, too.

You may or may not have come across these books already. Fairly recently I came across these two Lovecraft books by Kenneth Hite. Tour de Lovecraft is a cleaned-up collection of Livejournal posts he had made regarding his thoughts on Lovecraft's stories, covering everything in the Penguin Classics anthologies as well as that one he ghost wrote for Houdini. The other is Cthulhu 101, which serves as an amusing introductory book for the Cthulhu Mythos.

I know and have read/enjoyed Tour de Lovecraft, but somehow Cthulhu 101 slipped under my radar. I'm so glad you told me about it! Knowing the other one, I'd like to read this one, too. Thanks, my friend.

Thank you so much! We're still waiting on the final lab results, but she's recovering very well from the surgery. It's a full-time job, getting her to rest and not move around very much, as she clearly feels better than she did before the operation! Which, of course, is a good thing. :)

First of all: yaaaaaay for Virginia! Hope she recovers well & quickly. What a relief.

Second: finally got to listen to your two-part Kate Wilhelm narration, & was impressed (as ever) by your ability to put emotion into your characters without going over the top. Fine, nuanced work.

Thank you!

And I'm most grateful to you for your kind words about the narration. You've absolutely made my day. I'm so delighted that the emotion came through! I appreciate your listening tremendously. Thanks so much!
