The New Semester, It Draws Nigh!

Hi there! Happy Friday, everyone!

1. Tremendous thanks to all of you who took part in my poll about my October posts. (It's still open, if you wish to participate.) I really appreciate your feedback! My countdown will indeed be appearing here in October, and I truly hope you enjoy it.

2. Students from five different continents are enrolled for my "Science Fiction, Part 1: From Modern Beginnings through the Golden Age" course for Mythgard Institute, and I couldn't be more thrilled! Registration is still open for this class, and it's also still open for my one-time live lecture event on "The Hunger Games and the Science Fiction Tradition."

3. Happy early birthday to roo2, darthsindel1981, ceosanna, amygrech, dormannheim, super_chik, dement1a, and funkyturtle. May all of you enjoy many happy returns of the day, my friends!

Which continents are missing? Antarctica would be my first guess; after that, I would think Africa would be most likely, though South America seems possible. . . .

Asia is certainly surprising: It has a number of countries where many people learn English, some of those countries have sfnal communities, and most basically, it holds more than half the human race!

And on a related note, I came across a new Cthulhu-themed game called Miskatonic School for Girls. Among the students are Hannah Armitage, Wanda Gilman, Josephine Curwen, and Erica Zann, among others. No Wilma Whateley though. The letter on the back of the box is a hoot.

What sort of game is this? Roleplaying, card, board, computer, MMO? It sounds like as much of a hoot as the Drones Club rpg. . . .

It's a deck-building card game and was made by a new company called Fun to 11. Their web site includes an instructional video.

BTW where's this Drones Club RPG from?

It seems to be a noncommercial fan product. It has four stats: The Readies, The Old Grey Matter, Appearance, and Vim & Vigour. I'm not sure of the mechanics, but it seemed to have the atmosphere.

I haven't done anything so direct, but years ago, in a friend's fantasy campaign, I created a GURPS character based on Bertie. The setting was Brust's Dragaera, and I had decided that he was Tazendra's nephew, and suddenly the image came into my mind of Tazendra as one of Bertie's terrifying aunts. . . .

Ryan and I reviewed your syllabus for the sci-fi class this semester. He was in awe of the awesomeness. I'm planning on enrolling at Mythgard come Spring semester. Do you know when enrollment will open up? I'm just going to start out with one class at a time, but I'm elated at the opportunity.

Hey there! :) I'm soooo thrilled that Ryan liked the SF syllabus! Registration is still open through the end of this week, in case you (or he) is interested in "sitting in" just for kicks. (Auditing is a fraction of the cost of taking the class for credit.) The second half of the course will be offered in the spring.

I'm so, so excited to hear you're going to enroll in the Spring! I'm not exactly sure when enrollment begins - November, perhaps? I honestly don't remember how it worked last year - but I'll most definitely post about it when registration begins. It will be fabulous to have you as a Mythgardian! :D

I'm super pumped about attending. Unfortunately I won't have the time to devote to it this semester even for an audit (making some personal changes...pm to follow), otherwise I would. Also, the most intimidating thing on the list is having a little less than a week to read Dune! I've started that book several times, but have always had difficulty getting through it because I have to go read the appendices to understand what they're talking about, haha!
