I am off this morning to participate in the Fourth Annual Fall Humanities Symposium at Belmont:

In my presentation I'll be revisiting my M.A. thesis (of way too many years back) about the formation and constitutions of the Lost Colony of Transylvania (Halloween-sounding, no?) and the Lost State of Franklin. It would be more fun if my antibiotics hadn't decided to make me violently ill last night for several hours, but hey, even feeling puny, I can't turn down the chance to talk about constitutional history. I'm that far gone in geekiness.

More Halloween goodness will follow. For now, I want to show the love for [livejournal.com profile] pktheater's lovely holiday post. And thanks to all who responded to yesterday's poll with your excellent Halloween music recommendations! The "Monster Mash" seemed to be a recurring favorite: go here for the lyrics and here to be "Monster Mashed."

And now, a quote for the day, from an award-winning and revered poet:

Here was a place where none would ever come
For shelter, save as we did from the rain.
We saw no ghost, yet once outside again
Each wondered why the other should be so dumb;
And ruin, and to our vision it was plain
Where thrift, outshivering fear, had let remain
Some chairs that were like skeletons of home.

There were no trackless footsteps on the floor
Above us, and there were no sounds elsewhere.
But there was more than sound; and there was more
Than just an axe that once was in the air
Between us and the chimney, long before
Our time. So townsmen said who found her there.

Oh no! Some sort of flu??? Poor thing. :::hugs::: (Virtually, of course - *I* don't want to catch it...)

Awww! Thank you for your comfort! (Just looking at your icon, I feel better!) I had a throat infection, thus the antibiotics, but wow, for a good half a day there, I couldn't even keep water down. I guess it was the medicine. Either that or a 24-hour bug. Icky. On the other hand, I lost 4 lbs. in less than 24 hours - not my intention, but at least my suits for the conference next week will be pleasantly roomy. LOL!

Ben Franklin is my hero.

How come you don't live in Pennsylvania, anyhow? Hmm? she asked, raising her eyebrows suspiciously.

Clearly it's a mistake on my part! I'm missing some great snow and great conversation! And Ben Franklin is cool.

Well it seems that a lot of us are on the same page with "Moster Mush" LOL

Love your quote of the as always.

Good luck with your Lost Colony of Transylvania and the Lost State of Franklin. Are you going to post so that we can read?

Hi there, (((FG)))! Thanks so much for your good wishes on my talk. They helped! :) I wasn't planning on posting it - to be honest, I just talked from notes, since it was based on my old M.A. thesis, and I figured that was too long to ask people to read. If you're interested, though, let me know and I'll be glad to email it to you. Don't feel obligated - I know you have a lot of work of your own right now. Thanks for asking, though!
