Have you seen my Transylvania?
Oct. 27th, 2005 07:37 amI am off this morning to participate in the Fourth Annual Fall Humanities Symposium at Belmont:

In my presentation I'll be revisiting my M.A. thesis (of way too many years back) about the formation and constitutions of the Lost Colony of Transylvania (Halloween-sounding, no?) and the Lost State of Franklin. It would be more fun if my antibiotics hadn't decided to make me violently ill last night for several hours, but hey, even feeling puny, I can't turn down the chance to talk about constitutional history. I'm that far gone in geekiness.
More Halloween goodness will follow. For now, I want to show the love for
pktheater's lovely holiday post. And thanks to all who responded to yesterday's poll with your excellent Halloween music recommendations! The "Monster Mash" seemed to be a recurring favorite: go here for the lyrics and here to be "Monster Mashed."
And now, a quote for the day, from an award-winning and revered poet:
Here was a place where none would ever come
For shelter, save as we did from the rain.
We saw no ghost, yet once outside again
Each wondered why the other should be so dumb;
And ruin, and to our vision it was plain
Where thrift, outshivering fear, had let remain
Some chairs that were like skeletons of home.
There were no trackless footsteps on the floor
Above us, and there were no sounds elsewhere.
But there was more than sound; and there was more
Than just an axe that once was in the air
Between us and the chimney, long before
Our time. So townsmen said who found her there.
