eldritchhobbit: (Halloween/trick or treat)
[personal profile] eldritchhobbit
Every year, my parents send their granddog, the fabulous Virginia, a Halloween costume for her to wear (as well as treats to bribe her to model for pictures). This year she is a banana split. That's right: a banana split. *wink*

"Sonnet 100"
by Fulke Greville, Lord Brooke (1554-1628)

In night when colors all to black are cast,
Distinction lost, or gone down with the light;
The eye a watch to inward senses placed,
Not seeing, yet still having powers of sight,

Gives vain alarums to the inward sense,
Where fear stirred up with witty tyranny,
Confounds all powers, and thorough self-offense,
Doth forge and raise impossibility:

Such as in thick depriving darknesses,
Proper reflections of the error be,
And images of self-confusednesses,
Which hurt imaginations only see;

And from this nothing seen, tells news of devils,
Which but expressions be of inward evils.

What a sweet and forbearing dog. I like the bee suit. I like the poem too. It is exactly the time I am trying to learn about. The poem really gives a feeling of the pre-electric light world.

She is the best, she really is. The bee suit was a scream!

I'm so glad you like the poem, too! I see exactly what you mean about that "pre-electric light world" atmosphere it creates.

Oh Virginia!

I am going to get booted out of the office for laughing so hard. : P

Brandon's dogs are going to be bees this year and he is going to be the beekeeper.

LOL! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who laughed. :) (That makes it difficult to hold the camera still!)

Brandon's dogs are going to be bees this year and he is going to be the beekeeper.

Oh, how clever! That will be brilliant.

Hahahaha! What a good spirited dog she is! She deserves an extra treat.

Love the bee one especially! And is that Princess Leia?!

She really is the sweetest thing. She puts up with so much from her silly humans. She did indeed get an extra treat... or three. ;)

The bee costume was a hoot!

Yes indeed, that's Princess Leia. :D It was sort of a family joke, since my favorite costume when I was young was Princess Leia. (See below.) Poor Virginia, paying for my youth! Haha.

What a good, good girl Virginia is. I think my favorite is the bee, though the banana split "takes the cake" for this year. (Sorry, my jokes are bad before I've had coffee.)

Thoroughly enjoying this year's Halloween Countdown!

LOL! ;) She is indeed the best girl there is. We feel fortunate that she puts up with her silly humans. And that bee suit was a scream.

Thoroughly enjoying this year's Halloween Countdown!

Oh, I'm so tickled to hear it! Thank you. :)

Have to say, I'm amazed Virginia will wear these. How fun! I love this year's and the Princess Leia costume.

Aw, thanks! Given the proper cheesy or peanut-buttery enticement, she becomes remarkably cooperative. ;) She knows we have a bargain, though, so we have to make good on our end and produce the treats as soon as the pictures are taken. LOL!

I'm still trying to get over the Princess Leia one myself. I was laughing so hard I could barely hold the camera still. And just when I'd think I had the perfect shot, one of her ears would pop out from under the wig, and we'd have to start all over again. *snort*

Oh, thank you! She tolerates the costumes with a kind of long-suffering dignity as long as she knows she'll be well compensated with treats. ;) When she's not all dressed up in a costume, though, she's naturally a ham; the minute the camera comes out, she's right in front of it, posing, whether you intended to take a picture of her or not. And she does love her soft sweaters and coats for our winter walks. She prances around in those and struts her stuff. ;)

Aww... I wasn't sure she'd feel up to it this year and that made me really sad. I think it's even cuter than the bee!

Aw, thank you so much! She was doing very well, then she got an infection (to be expected, after the chemo, and thus far she hasn't had any problems), and this past weekend she had to go to the hospital because the antibiotics were making her sicker than the infection. :( Thank goodness she's mostly recovered now, bouncing back even as I type this. Thanks for your kind words. *hugs*

OMG, this is the funniest thing ever. I see who wears the banana split in your household! *wink* Cuppy: 1, Chris: 0. I need to be sure Virginia never sees this photo; it will give her ideas.

That is an absolute hoot. *high fives*

A Boston Banana Split?
Ok, my mind is now officially warped for the weekend.
Very cute, but incredibly odd!
(And the sonnet is a nice exercise in weirdness, too.)

I think your mom (I'm assuming it's your mom who makes the costumes,) outdid herself this year. The costume is fantastic! I wish I was half as creative. My dogs are going to have to do with store bought ones. :-)

Aw, thanks so much! I think they vary from year to year (I'm trying to recall...). This one, actually, is store bought. The very bottom picture, the witch costume, definitely was handmade, I remember. Opening the package from my folks every October has become something of a ritual - I always hold my breath to see what Virginia will be. ;)

And the poem is right, the internal workings of the self are by far the scariest thing out there.
