Happy belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] astromachy and [livejournal.com profile] manonlechat, happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] shalna, and happy early birthday to [livejournal.com profile] estellye, [livejournal.com profile] green_key, [livejournal.com profile] reynardine, [livejournal.com profile] brandaluna, [livejournal.com profile] arisbe, [livejournal.com profile] dirtwitch, and [livejournal.com profile] dominique012. May you enjoy many happy returns of the day!

I appreciated this post comparing Tumblr and LiveJournal (and I think the comparison holds true for other blogging platforms, as well). I'm not knocking Tumblr, as it certainly has its uses, but I value LJ (and similar platforms) for several of the reasons [livejournal.com profile] asya_ana names, including the fact that Tumblr emphasizes images over words (and in both my professional and fandom lives, I'm a text-based person), and Tumblr isn't nearly as communication-friendly. It seems to me that the two accomplish different objectives, and one isn't a substitute for the other. Here's the post: "Why You Shouldn't Abandon LJ for Tumblr."

Now, after saying I'm text-minded, I'm going to post a photo. Ha! As seen on the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville:

Believe in Sherlock Holmes

I've looked at Tumblr but could never figure out how to comment or interact with anyone. If I like something, I want to tell the person, "Hey, that's cool!" Maybe I'm just old and don't get it. And I mean older than 15. And 25. And... well, you get the idea.

(and in both my professional and fandom lives, I'm a text-based person)

Oh, thank you! I am glad I am not the only one! I love pretty pics as much as anyone, but I'm a words person and always have been. As LJ continues to dwindle and as our culture in general becomes more image-based, I wonder if I will be the last person left on earth holding a real book with text in it?

I can imagine myself standing on some abandoned beach, clutching my old keyboard that has now been rendered obsolete because no one types words or even knows how to read them anymore, and shaking my fist at the heavens for the injustice of it all.

*twitch*

Don't even get me started on how nobody seems to know how to capitalize, punctuate, or (heaven forbid) SPELL anymore.

***

I don't think this scenario is extreme as it sounds. Look how image-based tablets and phones are now the standard means for communicating. I'm guessing there are scholarly papers about differences in the way text-based people think/process information vs. the way image-based people do. I'd ask for some recommendations if you know of any, but I'm afraid reading them would only depress me.

I often feel like a dinosaur facing my own inevitable extinction.

Please, words, don't ever leave me.

That's it in a nutshell. That's been my experience exactly! What you said. :)

*huge hugs to you* I'm so glad you liked the photo!

BTW, speaking of events in our backyard, did you see this? Any chance I might see you there?

I'd never think of leaving LJ for tumblr. I do have an account at tumblr but, as I recently told a friend, it's for seeing, rather than being seen. I don't post, or repost, there, though I will "like" when I, well, like something. *g* I'm not abandoning LJ for DW, either.

That makes great sense!

I'm so glad you're staying. *hugs you*
