I'm off to Santa Fe for a conference -- and apparently some snow. (My brain insists on playing "You can drum a gentle drum, and I can seat guests as they come, chatting not about Heidegger but wine..." on continual loop. Silly brain.) But before I leave...

* Three brilliant and important science fiction novels appear to be headed to the small screen. Variety reports that SyFy will be adapting Philip K. Dick's The Man in the High Castle as a miniseries (with Ridley Scott and Frank Spotnitz at the helm, which rather eased my initial panic at the news), and Mary Doria Russell reports that her novels The Sparrow (one of my all-time favorites) and Children of God may become a full-fledged series for AMC.

* Not even Gabriel "You've Loved Me Since Excalibur" Byrne and his fantastic greying wig could salvage the shipwreck that was Vikings. I can't bear to watch another episode. Woe. At least I have Ripper Street for one more week. We may give the new shows Bates Motel and Orphan Black a test drive when they debut later this month.

* How is one supposed to choose among all of these competing versions of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on DVD?

Santa Fe? I'm so jealous -- it's one of my favorite road trip destinations. BTW, if you have never eaten at Maria's, DO. You can ask at any gas station, & the locals will tell you how to get there. Great New Mexican food & a whole margarita menu, at very reasonable prices. (I think I need a road trip now.)

Been asking myself the same thing. I haven't bought a bluray player yet but for especially lush films like Hobbit I've been buying the combo packs for the inevitable day (I can't take the thought of a full transition as my DVD collection is... extensive). I think I might have to go Lego, due to the cute.

BTW, your icon is outstanding. Did you make it?

Augh, it's such a tough choice! It's nice that so many include both the bluray and standard DVD formats. I'm leaning toward the Walmart version, due to the booklet, but it's difficult to choose.

Oh, good point! That definitely makes sense. I also suspect that Spock will have a closer (if not particularly easier/warmer) relationship with Sarek, as I'm guessing they'll both have a hand in establishing "New Vulcan" somewhere.

It's a pity to hear Vikings is no good, but then it is from the History Channel and I should know better than to trust them to not mangle history.

Ripper Street is nothing short of brilliant and I'm really hoping for more seasons.

Good point about the History Channel. I suppose the big surprise was that they didn't manage to work Hitler, ghosts, or ancient aliens into the show somehow. (Though I only watched the first episode. Who knows what happened next? Perhaps I'm speaking too soon.)

Isn't Ripper Street fantastic? I read that it has indeed been renewed for another season. I hope it's around a long time.

Sci Fi has generally done better with the minseries format. Their adaptation of Dune was IMO a huge improvement over what Lynch did. Frank Spotnitz is not a guarantee in my mind. I recall all too well how he mishandled the Kolchak remake back in 2005.

And speaking of upcoming TV, April 7 will see the debut of the second season of Nyarko-san (FTW a series about a guy whose girlfriend is the Crawling Chaos Nyarlathotep).

See? Didn't I tell you Michael Hirst was incapable of any historical accuracy? I think the thing that bugged me the most is them following this modern trend of showing anything set in a medieval or dark age time period having everyone wear brown and be covered in dirt (or something else if they're not king). I understand wanting to get away from that crisp starched whites look of 1950's medieval films, but do some research people. Vikings loved colors. We know they had lots of blues, reds, oranges, yellows. It's mainly green they were short on. And they had fantastic woven trim on their clothing. We won't mention Danes having no idea England was to their west, even though them and their southern neighbors made it over there in force in the 400-500's.

We've got the first episode of Bates Motel on the DVR. It will be a couple of days before we have a chance to watch it, but I'm looking forward to it. I agree with you, though, I'm not sure how far they can take the idea or what they can do with it. It will be interesting to see.
