Happy birthday to Bram Stoker (8 November, 1847 – 20 April, 1912)!

dracula

β€œThere was one great tomb more lordly than all the rest; huge it was, and nobly proportioned. On it was but one word, DRACULA.”

And how is the Annotated Dracula? I was almost put off from Klinger's Annotated Sherlock because he seemed to be claiming that Holmes and Watson were real, not fictional, until I realized he had his tongue firmly in his cheek. Is this one similar?

It's good. I haven't gone cover-to-cover with it, but what I've read so far is well done. I'm currently loving on his Annotated Lovecraft, and it's fantastic.

You're right, his annotated Holmes plays The Game, but no worries: his other annotations don't do anything similar. He does bring a lot of historical context in with Dracula and Lovecraft, which I really like.

Even though he was playing the game, he still managed to give me what I love in Annotations, which is the background info of what was happening during Conan Doyle's time that would influence his writing. The fact that he was able to give accurate info while still keeping up the pretense made it even more fun to read.

I much enjoyed his annotated Holmes, but I haven't read anything else by him.

Aren't his Holmes volumes terrific?
