Happy birthday to Edgar Allan Poe (19 January, 1809 – 7 October, 1849)!

"Poe Returning to Boston" - L3007227

"Alone"
by Edgar Allan Poe

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were--I have not seen
As others saw--I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I lov'd, I loved alone.
Then--in my childhood--in the dawn
Of a most stormy life--was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold--
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by--
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

I have yet to get into Boston to see that statue. I think I'll wait until spring. ;)

What a great statue (lucky Boston!) And I very much like Alone, which I've not read before - thank you. And happy birthday, Edgar Allen Poe!

Isn't the statue amazing? So very rock-n-roll. I love it.

I'm so happy you liked the poem! It's one of my Poe favorites.

I love the statue! What a great homage to such a talented man. So Happy Birthday to the man who has brought me, as well as so many others, hours and hours of spooky pleasure!

Fun little piece of trivia. The Japanese mystery writer Taro Hirai took the pen name Edogawa Ranpo because, when spoken by a Japanese person fairly quickly, it sounds kind of like Edgar Allan Poe.

Oh, that is fun!!!! :)

By the way, is there any chance I'll see you at ConCarolinas this year? Joel from MST3K will be there. I'm ridiculously excited about that.

Afraid not. I did however make it to MarsCon, where I got to meet David Weber of Honor Harrington fame. This gave me an opportunity to ask a burning question. Namely, does Solarian League propaganda portray Baroness Medusa as a snake-themed, leather-clad dominatrix. Because really, it does sound like a name of a snake-themed, leather-clad dominatrix. His answer was no, they haven't stooped quite that low.

Aw, you'll be missed!

David Weber and I did a signings table stint together once. (Which of these doesn't fit? I know, I know. I kept getting asked to move aside while people took photos of him! LOL.) Nice guy. Your question cracked me up! You're right: her name is very suggestive. I bet he got a laugh out of that.
